EMampondweni Historical and Tribal Tours

EMampondweni Historical and Tribal Tours We are tour guides, specializing in the the history of our wonderful area, Pondoland, and we concentrate on the Port St Johns and the Wild Coast.

The Grosvenor was wrecked on our coast, and Port St Johns was the last place that received an 'all OK' message from the Waratah, before she went missing forever. If the Titanic hadn't hit an iceberg, the Waratah, would have been the most famous ship mystery in history. We were born and brought up here, so we can give you a real tour of the area, and introduce you to the wonderful Pondo Culture.

My trip with Penn State University, Pennsylvania, USA, started yesterday with me traveling to beautiful Grahamstown to meet the group and then travel to Commando Drift Nature Reserve and later to Tsolwana where we visited and worked last year. We are now leaving The Kei Bridge and resuming a very quiet journey, I might add. We should arrive at my destination at 5:00 im the Twilight zone.

Beautiful, Historical, Grahamstown..im so glad I had her for an hour to myself...this is not the first time ive been here, but the buildings take my breath away, Frontier Hotel, it still has that olde charm, cigar and leather smell as you enter reception....The Observatory Museum clings to a side walk amongst smaller coffee and tea shops..

Todays journey led us into the Magwa Tea estate, where an eerie silence takes over the normally buzzing plantation, down the avenue to the Magwa Falls..Majestic, mesmerizing, cascading down into a white mist where even daredevils dare not get to close to the chasm. We met Mamkonde who brought out a humbling effect in my guest Sandra, with tear in the eye, she expressed her gratefulness for all that she has as the old lady of 67yrs traipsed along the footpath with a pole almost the size of the ones used by Eskom for electricity..and then...the beautiful "white" elephant" viewing and cultural centre, just basking in the sun, an empty shell. After a walk along the krantz, we turned for Port St Johns for a good rest or so I thought....at this moment sitting at the Greyhound Coaches departure lounge in Umtata, starting my next adventure.

The first leg of my pre-Xmas tour starts at Protea Glenn, Msikaba, Eastern Cape. My guest, Sandra from Canada is a super hiking partner. We hiked for 17km today and could go another 10!! We visited the precious Vulture Colony in the Mkambati- Msikaba gorge, watching the young Chicks taking chances and flying short distances...so peaceful and serene are the surroundings you just want to drink in and print to memory. Next we hiked down to Khotsos beach, which I may say is....wow! The Bonus for me is that I needed to see the condition as per my Khotso project and it is in mint condition! Spotted some hump back whales and porpoises...tomorrow we visit Magwa Falls and do a 10km hike along the falls...truly blessed to be in these surroundings...

The Arts and Culture Festival preparations are underway in earnest in Port St. Johns, Eastern Cape. The workmen started on the tents to house the people and also the Arts displays lastnight. The banging of equipment and jovial mood of the guys created sweet music in my ears as PSJ comes alive this weekend! The festival is taking place on the 14th to 15th November 2014, Port St Johns Sports Grounds! Everybody is welcome to display and sell your wares and also kindly buy and support our Artists!

The smell of yesterday, today and tomorrow and a combination of other flowers still lingers in my nostrils. The first leg of our journey took us to Mbotyi Beach just outside of Lusikisiki. The highlight of the trip was visiting old haunts of yesteryear, tinkling streams, quiet spaces where you can actually hear nature calling, flowers blooming and blossoming against all odds...amidst backdrops of walls, walls, just a reminder that hands lovingly tended to them and sadly times have changed and sadness has occupied....but Nature is keeping up her fight...Magwa Tea Estate...Standing above Fraser Falls with Nic Els, a reminder to him of days gone by and to me....a Future full of promise....Day two of Our Heritage Tour.....a flip of the coin.....

These are just but a few delights we have tucked away for you on these marvelous journeys!!!
