Dome Impact Tours Registered site specific Tourist Guide in the Vredefort Dome Meteorite Impact Crater and WHS

I am working in the site as a departmental official at the Vredefort Dome Project Management office in Venterskroon since 2006. I am a registered Tourist Guide in the Vredefort Dome since 2016 and love guiding visitors through the site.

Albert en Anton van Potchefstroom het die Vredefort Koepel impak krater besoek op 18 April 2026 ; en 'n toer gedoen deur 'n gedeelte van die werelderfenis gebied saam met Dome Impact Tours.

Daar is veral gekyk na die geologie en geskiedenis in die gebied , die groot wilde Olienhout bos van ongeveer 30 ha bewonder , en die uitkyk oor die Vaal Rivier , wat deur die Venterskroon Vallei kronkel , waardeer.

Die kommentaar op die toer was soos volg : " Ons het die toer baie geniet , met baie inligting en kennis. Baie dankie ! "

Hester and the Golden Wisdom Group from Welkom , visited the Vredefort Dome on the 30th October 2025 , and did a 4 tour with Dome Impact Tours , through part of the world heritage site.

Photos taken during the tour were as follows : At the granite quarry of Mr. Pedretti (Photo 1 and 2) , and at the Schurwedraai viewpoint. (Photo 3)

The comments of the group on the tour were as follows : " Thanks for the most interesting tour. We as the Golden Wisdom Group from Welkom are going back filled with fresh information. " " En ek wil jou ook komplimenteer , jy KEN jou vak.... A job well done ! "

Benjamin visited the Vredefort Dome on the 16th October 2025 , and did a 8 tour through the site with Dome Impact Tours. Both the North West - and Orange Free State provinces sides of the world heritage site were visited , with lunch at the Venterskroon Inn , on the North West Province side.

Hereby some photos taken during the tour : At the Stonehenge River Lodge in the Kopjeksraal area (Photo 1) , under the big Belhambra tree in front of the Venterskroon Information Centre (Photo 2) , and at a good example of Shatter Cones on Quartzite rock , next to the Schoemansdrift bridge. (Photo 3)

Elaine and her husband , from Johannesburg , visited the Vredefort Dome on the 15th October 2025 , with two friends from the United Kingdom. They did a tour through part of the world heritage site with Dome Impart Tours , and a few places of interest that they have visited , were as follows :

The granite quarry that was mine by Mr. Pedretti , from Italy , for its Parys granite , or African Juparana , as it was called by him. (Photo 1) The viewpoint at Schurwedraai shows a scenic view through the first impact ring with the Vaal River dividing the impact crater between the North West and the Orange Free State provinces . (Photo 2) The tour ended at the Venterskroon Inn hotel where we had a good lunch. (Photo 3)

Tanny from India visited the Vredefort Dome with his family , and geologists parents , on the 20th August 2025 , and did a tour through part of the site with Dome Impact Tours.

Photos were taken during the tour at the following points of interest , especially for the geologists parents : At the Vredefort Granophyre D**e (Photo 1) - having a closer look at the petroglyphs / rock engravings on the Granophyre (Photo 2) ,
at the overturned quartzite formations of Kommandonek (Photo 3) , at the view over the Venterskroon valley with the Vaal River following the valley (Photo 4) , and on request , a photo with the tourist guide (Photo 5).

Melinda from Johannesburg visited the Vredefort Dome with Els and Mieke from Belgium on the 24th July 2025 , and did a tour through part of the site with Dome Impact Tours.

Some of the points of interest that were visited was the Vredefort Granophyre D**e at Daskop , where we attracted a lot of attention to the cattle that were feeding nearby. (Photo 1) We were also stranded outside Parys for a while , struggling to get the handbrake released so that we could continue with the tour. (Photo 2) The splendid scenic view at the Schurwedraai viewpoint had to be captured on photo (Photo 3) , and the tourist guide with it. (Photo 4)

Corinna and Anais from Belgium visited the Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site on the 24th May 2025 and did a tour through the site with Dome Impact Tours.

The tour started in the Archaean Basement of granite , at the Granophyre D**e with the rock engravings bearing witness of he San history in this region. (Photo 1)

Parys granite mining in this Archaean Basement was also looked at and the granite quarry of the first Italian , Mr Pedretti , who immigrated to this area , was visited , which included also the ruins of the house he lived in. (Photo 2)

Just before entering the first impact ring , the evidence of quartzite overturned rock formations , could clearly be seen at Kommandonek. (Photo 3)

The damaged Schoemansdrift bridge , due to floods earlier during 2025 , show clear signs of what the power of water can be when coming down in a flood. (Photo 4)

Aline and Isabella from Belgium did a tour through the Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site with Dome Impact Tours on 17 May 2025.

They did a whole day tour through the Orange Free state and North West provinces sides of the site looking into the unique geology , history and natural beauty in the site. Some of the sites that they have visited , were as follows :

The Granophyre D**e with the San rock engravings (Photo 1)
The Stonehenge in Africa lodge with the Parys granite blocks representing the Stonehenge (Photo 2)
The first impact ring of the impact crater with Kommandonek showing the overturned quartzite rock formations (Photo 3)
The natural shelter at Thabela Thabeng dating back to the Late Stone Age (Photo 4) , and
The damaged bridge at Schoemansdrift due to the recent floods (Photos 5 - 7)

Their comments on the tour were as follows : " Gustav is an incredible well of knowledge. Things I thought I knew about the Vredefort impact crater were no match for his expertise. Thoroughly enjoyed the entire tour and its been a highlight of my time here.
A really nice tour with Gustav , I loved the engravings from the San. "

Zack and Shanti Abba from Gauteng visited the Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site on the 19th April 2025 , and did a tour through part of the site with Dome Impact Tours.

Same of the points of interest that were visited were as follows :
- The Vredefort Dome Granitic Grasslands at Daskop. From this point the first impact ring could also be observed around Parys and Vredefort. Photo 1
- The Pedretti granite quarry at Kopjeskraal. Remnants of Pedretti's house , that was build with parts of Parys granite blocks , were appreciated. Photo 2
- Unused Parys granite dimension blocks , which show signs of pseudotchylite , were seen at the Stonehenge River Lodge. Photo 3
- Before entering into the first impact ring , Kommandonek could be observed with its overturned quartzite rock formations due to the meteorite impact. Photo's 4 and 5.

Michael and Marsha Bourque from Texas visited the Vredefort Dome WHS on 24 March 2025 and did a 4 hour tour with Dome Impact Tours through part of the site.

During the tour the following photos were taken at a few points of interest , that were visited :

Photo 1 : In the core area on the Archaean Basement where the first impact ring can be seen in the back ground.
Photo 2 : In the Leeukop granite quarry where the Parys granite with the Pseudotachylitic breccia's melt zones show exceptional examples.
Photo 3 : The same Parys granite with Pseudotachylite which is presented in a nicely cut and polished slab.
