Our South Africa Shark & Marine Conservation Program includes a PADI dive course — Open Water (OW) or Advanced Open Water (AOW), depending on your existing qualification.

Get involved in reef surveys, marine life monitoring, coral health observations and beach clean-ups alongside the local field team. 🪸
These are self funded programs; program fees and a separate registration fee apply.

Going alone doesn’t mean being alone.

A lot of people start looking at volunteering in Africa on their own.

They may book by themselves.

Our South Africa Wildlife Conservation Program in Limpopo gives volunteers the opportunity to take part in a structured conservation experience that can include wildlife monitoring, tracking, enrichment activities, conservation work, educational sessions and time in the field.

What is it actually like to volunteer at a Big Cat Sanctuary in South Africa?

For many people, the chance to see lions, tigers and other big cats is what initially sparks their interest.

But volunteering at a sanctuary is about much more than being close to the animals.

Volunteers live on-site at the sanctuary and work alongside the team, becoming part of the practical daily routine required to care for the animals and maintain their environment.

Depending on the day, your activities may include:

🐾 Cleaning and maintaining enclosures
🧩 Preparing enrichment
👀 Observing animal behaviour
🌿 Clearing invasive plants and assisting with habitat work
🛠️ General sanctuary and reserve tasks
🤝 Working alongside experienced sanctuary staff

The sanctuary is home to lions, tigers, leopards, caracals and servals.

There are no tourist-style big cat interactions or guaranteed animal contact. The experience focuses on practical work, observation and supporting the daily welfare of the animals from an appropriate distance.

One of the things we particularly like about this program is its small size.

🏡 Volunteers live on-site at the sanctuary
👥 The house accommodates only around 6–7 volunteers
🤝 Volunteers live and work alongside sanctuary staff
🌍 The program is self-funded

This can be a wonderful option for someone who wants to experience the reality of sanctuary life rather than simply visiting a wildlife attraction.
