A Tribute to a True Legend – Mukhtar “Mac” Mohamed (1953 – 2025)

From Jacaranda Athletic Club
It is with deep sorrow and profound respect that we bid farewell to one of Laudium’s most cherished sons, a local legend, devoted family man, and fellow athlete — Mukhtar Mohamed, fondly known as Mac, who passed away on Thursday, 7th August 2025 at the age of 72, after a brief illness.

Mac’s legacy is woven into the fabric of the South African running community. A seasoned long-distance runner, Mac ran an astounding 14 Comrades Marathons, beginning his ultramarathon journey in 1980 at the age of 27. He first ran for the Magnolia Running Club and later the Phobians Athletic Club, sharing the road and countless memories with fellow veteran athletes such as Haffie Mohamed, Ashraf Theba, and Fallie Dino Moodley.

In 1982, just two years into his Comrades Marathon career, Mac achieved a remarkable milestone, clocking an extraordinary 7 hours and 18 minutes — earning him a coveted Silver Medal. He proudly became Laudium’s first Silver Medalist at the Comrades, a feat that inspired a generation of runners from our community.

Mac later joined the Lenasia Athletic Club before becoming a founding member of the Jacaranda Athletic Club in 1997. In fact, it was his suggestion to name the club “Jacaranda”, a reflection of both the area's unique identity and his vision for inclusivity and community. His passion for the sport and unwavering commitment to nurturing young and seasoned runners alike made him a beacon of motivation. Mac was also a prolific soccer player who mastered the game with his tremendous speed and diminutive built.

By profession, Mac was a Chartered Accountant, having studied at the University of Durban-Westville (UDW). His professional journey was equally inspiring, serving in senior positions at Transnet and later at the South African Revenue Services (SARS). He eventually stepped into semi-retirement, leaving behind a respected career marked by integrity and diligence.

Mac is survived by his beloved wife Khairoon (Khay), son Bashir, and daughters Saheema and Farhana. His love for his family and community was unwavering, and his absence leaves an irreplaceable void in the lives of those who knew him.

Tributes

Tribute by Hussain Kalla
Mukhtar Mohamed, or Mac as we knew him, was more than just a fellow athlete — he was our brother on the road. We shared thousands of kilometres together, through pain, joy, and deep personal moments. Mac had an unwavering commitment to running, but it was his humility and his constant encouragement that truly defined him. He would always check in on us during training, offer advice with a warm smile, and never hesitated to motivate someone chasing their first race or their best time. His presence was calming and strong — a true quiet giant.

It’s a tough loss — such a beautiful man. May Allah SWT bless his soul. I remember he used to say on cold winter mornings during our runs, “What’s the difference between running here and running on the beachfront? The sun rises in the same direction. The sun we’re seeing and the sunrise they’re seeing is the same. Life is just perspective.”

That was Mac — always wise, always grounding us. He was such a driving force. We all pray that Allah SWT receives him in a more beautiful state than we remember him. And we remember him with so much joy and love.

We pray for comfort and solace to the hearts of his family.

Tribute by Ashraf Theba
He was balanced in all aspects of life — never extreme, always grounded. Mukhtar was truly a people’s person. Whether you met him on the road, in the workplace, or at the masjid, he treated everyone with respect and kindness.

He dedicated himself to the growth of others. He was a tutor for the youth — mentoring and guiding them not only in their career choices, but also in religion, character, and sport. He had the rare ability to connect with people across generations. Whether you were a teenager trying to find your way or a veteran runner chasing one more finish, he had something wise and encouraging to say.

He believed in giving back, and he lived that value every single day. His counsel was sought after, his presence was comforting, and his example was inspiring. We’ve lost someone truly special — a mentor, a motivator, and most of all, a sincere friend.

The management, sponsors, and members of the Jacaranda Athletic Club extend our heartfelt condolences to the Mohamed family. We pray that Allah grants Mac the highest place in Jannah, and that his loved ones are granted strength, comfort, and sabr during this difficult time.

Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un — To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return.
