UPDATE: South Africa's new digital goods and currency border declaration system is now live. As of 1 July 2026, the South African Traveller Management System (SATMS) is officially operational across all international airports, land borders, seaports, and rail.
What is SATMS?
A digital pre-arrival declaration platform developed under SARS' SMART Border programme, in partnership with the BMA, FIC, and SARB. Travellers can now declare goods and currency – and pay applicable duties and VAT – online before reaching the border.
Key updates:
• Advance online declaration is now the required method under Section 15 of the Customs and Excise Act.
• Cash declaration threshold has increased from R25,000 to R100,000.
• Amounts over R100,000 require prior SARB authorisation.
• Free access via the SATMS app (App Store & Google Play) or the SARS website.
The system is designed to streamline compliance, enabling a more efficient declaration process at ports of entry. Full details and FAQs are available on the SARS website.
