The lions in the road weren't watching him. They were watching something much bigger.

In part two, our General Manager Godfrey tells the story he still laughs about, and why the commitment of the team, many of them from the village, has never changed.

Missed part one? You'll find it on our page.

Frame the perfect shot. A kudu bull with his spiralled horns, impala in the fresh green, two giraffe standing side by side and an elephant bull strolling down the road towards the vehicle. Madikwe offers endless inspiration for photographers of every level, so pack your long lens.

The flask comes out, the mugs line up on the vehicle, and Madikwe carries on all around you. A coffee stop in the bush is a regular part of the morning drive at Buffalo Ridge, with the plains wide open in front of you.

Out on drive with our guide Joseph.

Boma dinners under a blanket of a million stars.
Taste authentic South African flavours crafted with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, all served around the crackling warmth of a central campfire. The best stories aren't just told around a table - they’re shared beneath the open skies of Madikwe.

Slow mornings on the ridge.

Coffee in hand on your private deck while the plains of Madikwe are still soft with first light. Out on drive, a pause in the open grassland while the coffee is poured. Back at the lodge, breakfast by the pool, with views that stretch to the horizon. The day hasn't asked anything of you yet.

Godfrey was here before the first guest arrived. In 2004, with the furniture still being carried in, he welcomed the very first team members from the village, and he has been part of Buffalo Ridge ever since.

Today he's our General Manager. For him the best part is simple: this is the community's own lodge, and he wants to see its name keep growing.

Meet the team, part one. Stay tuned for part two next week, and the night he got caught between a pride of lions and a herd of buffalo.

Morning drive with Joseph, and two giraffes decided the road was theirs. Necks swinging, hooves planted, a slow, heavy contest played out right beside the vehicle.

Every drive in Madikwe writes its own story. Book your stay at Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge: https://www.buffaloridgesafarilodge.com/

There is a unwritten law in the bushveld: when the sun begins to dip below the horizon, everything stops for sundowners. Gin & tonic in hand, warm African breeze against your skin, and the distant call of an eagle owl signaling nightfall - this is where life slows down to the rhythm of nature.

Not every leopard sighting needs a game drive. One quiet evening at Buffalo Ridge, one of Madikwe's most elusive cats came down to the lodge waterhole. It drank slowly, its reflection still on the water, then slipped back into the dark. Our guests watched it all from the lodge.

Sometimes the wild comes to you. Thank you to Cassidy Smith for sharing these moments with us.
