Dinokeng - Nestled in the heart of Dinokeng Central and Dinokeng South, just a short drive from Pretoria, visitors will find a rich tapestry of heritage attractions that celebrate South Africa’s cultural and historical legacy.
Among these are the Willem Prinsloo Agricultural Museum, the elegant Sammy Marks Museum, and the Zonderwater Italian Cemetery—a solemn and beautifully maintained memorial to Italian prisoners of war held at Zonderwater during World War II.
Located approximately 43 km from Pretoria, Zonderwater was the largest Allied detention camp of its kind, housing over 100,000 Italian soldiers between 1941 and 1947, and remains a powerful site of remembrance today.
Bringing this heritage to life in a vibrant and engaging way is the Annual Traditional Mampoer Festival, taking place on Saturday, 6 June 2026, at the Willem Prinsloo Agricultural Museum. This much-loved event celebrates traditional South African farm culture, with a strong focus on mampoer heritage, community spirit, and family-friendly entertainment.
A major highlight of the festival is the Mampoer Rally and Expo, where enthusiasts can admire an impressive display of vintage, veteran, and classic cars, motorcycles, tractors, and old engines. This dedicated exhibition zone draws collectors and admirers from across the region, offering a nostalgic journey through mechanical history.
Adding a unique flair to the event, the BeetleManiacs community will host a special get-together and braai as part of the rally. Volkswagen Beetle owners are invited to showcase their beloved vehicles, connect with fellow enthusiasts, and enjoy a shared passion in a festive atmosphere. A dedicated camping area will be available for Beetle owners, with the option to bring their own gear or book a fully equipped camp-ready tent through Follow The Sun Expeditions.
The festival is designed for the whole family, offering a lively programme throughout the day. Visitors can enjoy the sounds of The Staccatos and traditional boere-orkeste, while the arena comes alive with boeredanse, boeresport, and interactive entertainment. Highlights include the popular Doggy Hour presented by the South African Animal Cancer Association, exciting horse shows, and a variety of activities for children such as jumping castles and more.
No visit would be complete without exploring the museum itself—step back in time at the beautifully preserved 1800s homestead, take a ride on an ox wagon, tractor, or even a camel, and browse through a wide selection of stalls offering food, crafts, and local products.
The Traditional Mampoer Festival is more than just an event—it is a celebration of heritage, community, and the timeless charm of farm life in Dinokeng.
