๐Ÿฆ Birds of Rosendal #1 ๐Ÿฆ

It feels only fitting to start our Birds of Rosendal series with one of our most familiar and entertaining locals โ€” the White-browed Sparrow-Weaver (Koringvoรซltjie).
Scientific name: Plocepasser mahali
Size: 18cm
https://newmansbirds.com/birds/white-browed-sparrow-weaver/

Nowโ€ฆ some of us in Rosendal may affectionately refer to them as โ€œVet Sand Mossiesโ€โ€ฆ but perhaps weโ€™ll keep that nickname between ourselves ๐Ÿคซ๐Ÿ˜‰

The White-browed Sparrow Weaver might not be the flashiest bird in the thornveld, but it might just be the most community-minded.
Their large communal nests can be spotted all over town โ€” hanging from telephone poles and tucked into trees โ€” and their friendly chatter is almost always part of Rosendalโ€™s soundtrack.

Living in family groups of up to 14, these cooperative nesters build their iconic messy bundles of grass and twigs in camel thorn trees, then open the door to up to nine other species who shelter inside. Scientists studying them are even exploring whether their rich social lives make them smarter.
Bold white eyebrow. Flash of white in flight. Loud liquid song from the treetops. Look and listen for them in dry thornveld across the country and especially in Rosendal.

Small act. Big impact. ๐Ÿฉธโœจ

Caught up with the SANBS team during their regular visit to Rosendal today. If youโ€™ve been thinking about donating but were a bit nervousโ€”this is your sign to go for it!

The team is amazing, the process is quick, and the feeling of knowing youโ€™ve helped someone in need is the best 'commission' there is. ๐Ÿ˜‰

EXACTLY 1-MONTH TO GO TODAY - PLEASE HELP DR ELSA TO RAISE FUNDS SO THAT WE CAN START BUILDING AN ISOLATION WARD

Every day, we work to save vulnerable animals and give them the best possible care. But when an animal arrives with a highly infectious disease, we face an added challenge - protecting every other patient in our clinic too.

That is why we desperately need to build a dedicated isolation ward.

Isolation wards are used when we need to hospitalise animals diagnosed with infectious diseases. This reduces the risk of spreading diseases to other animals in our care. A proper isolation ward is a completely separate room with its own preparation area for food and medication.

An isolation ward would allow us to:
โœ” Safely treat infectious patients
โœ” Protect healthy and recovering animals
โœ” Improve infection control standards
โœ” Save more lives during outbreaks
โœ” Provide better long-term veterinary care to our community

We are asking for your help to make this possible. All the funds raised from our annual Polar Bear Plunge taking place on the 4th July 2026 at the Arpa Dam in Fouriesburg, Free State will go towards this special project.

And our very own Dr Elsa is once again taking the plunge and she wants to raise a minimum of R40,000 - we do need between R80,000 - R100,000 in total to build and kit out the ward correctly so with her plunge she is aiming to secure at least 50% of the funds needed.

So far, a total of R2000 has been donated, so there is still quite a long way to go and no donation is too small, and every contribution will make a difference!
