SAPS WARNS E-HAILING COMMUTERS FOLLOWING REPORTED CRIMES AGAINST FEMALE PASSENGERS

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Rustenburg has noted with concern several reported incidents involving crimes against female commuters using e-hailing services.
The reported crimes include robbery and sexual assault. While investigations are ongoing and no arrests have been made at this stage, police are urging e-hailing commuters, particularly women travelling alone, to exercise extra caution.
Commuters are advised to:
- Share their trip details and live location with a trusted family member or friend.
- Verify the vehicle and driver details before entering the vehicle.
- Where possible, make electronic payment upfront to avoid unnecessary confrontations.
- Remain alert throughout the journey and report any suspicious behaviour to the police.
SAPS emphasises that the warning is not intended to create panic, but to encourage members of the community to take reasonable safety precautions when using e-hailing services.
Police further appeal to anyone who may have been a victim of a similar crime to come forward and report the matter at their nearest police station. Such information may assist investigators in identifying and bringing the perpetrators to justice.

🚨 BREAKING NEWS 🚨

Tailings facility wall collapses near Eland Mine

A section of the Samancor Dikwena Tailings Facility reportedly collapsed on Thursday afternoon, 13 August 2026, resulting in mud-like material flowing across an access road near Eland Mine’s Maroelabult shaft.

According to preliminary information from the Eland Management Team, employees at Maroelabult Mine noticed at around 17:30 that the access road from the Total Garage on the R566 towards the shaft road was covered by flowing mud-like material.

Visual observations subsequently indicated that the sidewalls of the Samancor Dikwena Tailings Facility facing the Eland Maroelabult shaft had collapsed, with a significant amount of material flowing across the Maroelabult shaft access road.

The full extent of the incident and any potential impact are still being investigated. Samancor Dikwena management has been informed and is conducting its own investigation.

Further information will be released as it becomes available.

Dikwena Chrome is a Samancor Chrome operation situated just outside Brits in the North West Province. (samancorcr.com)

WARNING TO MOTORISTS: Rock attacks escalate on N4
Motorists travelling between Pretoria and Hartbeespoort are urged to remain vigilant following a surge in rock throwing incidents on the N4.
Safety patrol officers report that they are responding to frequent incidents of rock throwing - almost daily. Road traps have previously led to robberies and murders.
The latest incident occurred on Monday, 20 July, when an elderly motorist's vehicle was severely damaged after rocks were allegedly thrown onto the road near a bridge close to Hartbeespoort.
According to Kyle Vosloo of SDS Protection, officers responded after receiving an alert to rocks scattered across the highway.
"When we arrived, five suspects fled the scene," Vosloo said.
The damaged vehicle was found about 500 metres further down the road. Members of SDS Protection assisted the motorist and remained with him until a tow truck and his family arrived.
Vosloo said the incidents are concentrated on the section of the N4 between the two Magalies toll plazas near Hartbeespoort.
SDS Protection is now patrolling the route several times a day due to the increase in incidents.
According to Vosloo, the attacks are most commonly reported early in the morning and late in the afternoon.
Motorists travelling during these times are urged to be especially alert, particularly when approaching bridges and overpasses.
