🐋 Incredible Humpback Whale Encounters in St Lucia! 🐋

Calling all nature lovers! If you're looking for an unforgettable wildlife experience, join us for boat-based whale watching right from the stunning beaches of the St Lucia Estuary in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

**When to visit:** The prime time for whale watching here is between **June and November**, when these magnificent creatures grace our warm waters.

**Why do they visit?** Humpback whales undertake one of the longest migrations of any mammal! They journey from their feeding grounds in the cold, nutrient-rich polar waters (like Antarctica) to the warmer, tropical and subtropical waters off our coast. Why? Primarily for **breeding and calving**! These sheltered, warmer waters provide an ideal nursery for their newborns, protecting them from predators and the harsh cold of their feeding grounds.

**A little more about these gentle giants:**
* **Gestation Period:** A humpback whale pregnancy lasts approximately **11 to 11.5 months**.
* **Weaning:** Calves are typically nursed for **6 to 11 months**, with some sources suggesting they can be fully weaned by around 11 months. They'll start to sample solid food (like krill) even while still nursing, preparing for their independent lives.
* **What do they eat?** Back in their polar feeding grounds, humpback whales are baleen feeders, meaning they have plates of baleen in their mouths instead of teeth. They primarily feast on vast quantities of **krill** (small, shrimp-like crustaceans) and small schooling fish like **herring and anchovies**.
