Tailor Made Safaris

Tailor Made Safaris Your tailor-made dream trip to South Africa, crafted by people who live and work there! And all of that less than two hours drive from each other.

The northern part of the KwaZulu-Natal province is a paradise for the nature and culture loving traveller. It is here that one finds not only savanna with the famous Big-5 and other animals, but also forests, beaches, lakes, estuaries, wetlands and of course the sub-tropical Indian Ocean. Where else can one kayak amongst hippos and crocodiles, watch turtles lay eggs, see whales breach, swim with d

olphins and whale sharks, scuba dive amazing coral reefs, embark on a walking safari with an armed ranger, take photos on game drives, enjoy the beach, or get eye to eye with cheetahs and elephants at an animal rehabilitation centre? Moreover, the climate here is lovely and the region practically malaria free! We regard ourselves as experts when it comes to create tours to northern KwaZulu-Natal. Contrary to other travel agents, we actually do really live here ourselves and can genuinely call ourselves specialists of the region. In addition, all our tours are created in such a way that one will really 'experience' South Africa rather than just cruise through South Africa 'sight seeing'. To achieve this, we give our guests/clients extensive information packs about the destinations, limit travel times between destinations to about 2 hours max, and have them stay for more than one day at destinations, in order to get a genuine experience. Lastly, all our guided tours are not led by a generic tour guide, but by a professional and highly qualified safari guide or biologist. Our travel products include self drive safaris, guided safaris or a combination thereof. In addition we focus on photographic safaris, where we can include gear rental and photographic workshops/lessons if so desired. Visit our website www.tailormadesafaris.co.za or drop us an email at [email protected]. We would love to help you create the safari of a lifetime!

Happy Spring day everyone! This stunning red flower belongs to a special tree, the sausage tree (Kigelia africana) and what makes these flowers special is that their main pollinators are not bees, but rather birds and at night bats! The wahlberg's epaulettes fruit bat to be precise. You can see that the main opening of the flower is extra large to accommodate these animals. The sausage tree is known for its large and heavy fruit that can be up to 60 cms long and has the shape of, you guessed it, a giant sausage. The fruit is poisonous for human consumption but does get used in traditional medicine. Wild animals such as elephant, hippos and baboons can eat the fruit.

One of the amazing benefits of spending time in nature in South Africa is the amazing stargazing opportunities that you will get. People living in Europe have no idea how many stars they don’t see because of the amount of light pollution, until they are in an area that is actually dark and you look up in wonder at how many stars you can see. It is truly and astonishing sight. If you’d like, your safari guide can tell you more about the constellations in the southern hemisphere and stars and planets you are looking at. The southern hemisphere also offers sights most Europeans never see: The Southern Cross, the Magelannic clouds, and the milky way directly overhead as opposed to skimming the horizon as it does at northern latitudes. Imagine looking up at the milky way and billions of stars with the call of a hyena in the distance, truly an unforgettable memory.
If you’re interested in getting pictures of the stars such as these, please have a look at our sister company Nature’s Light for photographic tours!

Safari Fun Facts: BLACK or WHITE???
One of the most common points of confusion for tourists are the names of the black and the white rhino. You may imagine some people looking at these rhinos and trying to see if the one is darker then the other…. This is not the case, they are both grey or, if they had a mudbath, they can look brown in color too, but never white or black! Then why do these rhinos have these silly names? What happened is that the first settlers from dutch descent called this the rhino with the wide lip. The word for wide in dutch is “wijd”, and this sound for someone from England a lot like the word “white”. And thus were the rhinos with wide lips named the "white rhinos". Then the other one, who is characterized with a narrower pointy upper lip, was then automatically named the “black” rhino, purely because it if the opposite of white, not because it has anything to do with the appearance of the rhino.
So bottom line is that the difference between the rhinos has nothing to with the color but more with the shape and function of the lips, white rhinos have wide lips for grazing grass and black rhinos have pointy lips for feeding on shrubs, bushes and trees. Furthermore the white rhino is a bit bigger overall and has a longer head then the black rhino. Black rhinos are generally more solitary, harder to spot and more temperamental. White rhinos are more social and can often be found in small groups.
