As the curtains close on an insightful and knowledge-packed SAACI Conference, I leave inspired, challenged, and even more committed to the future of the MICE and tourism industry.
One of my biggest highlights was the thought-provoking presentation by Dr. Pali Lehohla on “The Opportunity Brief – What We Need, What We Offer, and How We Grow Together.” His data-driven insights demonstrated the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) industry’s significant contribution to South Africa’s GDP and its potential to accelerate economic growth.
A powerful question echoed throughout the session: “Who Stole the Cheese?” This challenged us to reflect on South Africa’s estimated R14 trillion in economic value lost over the past 8–14 years through economic extraction and capital flight. More importantly, it challenged us to ask how the MICE industry can become a catalyst for retaining economic value within our local communities, ensuring that tourism creates lasting prosperity where it is experienced.
Another key takeaway that resonated deeply with me was the shift from simply selling destinations to creating meaningful experiences. As Jen and fellow panellists highlighted, today’s travellers and event buyers are seeking authentic human connections and immersive local experiences rather than standard itineraries. This presents an incredible opportunity for Destination Management Companies (DMCs) to design experiences that evoke emotion, celebrate local culture, and create memories, something that AI may support but can never truly replace.
This conference reinforced that the future of tourism lies in collaboration, innovation, sustainability, and intentional experience design. Platforms like SAACI are more than conferences, they are transformational spaces where industry leaders exchange knowledge, challenge conventional thinking, and influence the policies that will shape the future growth of tourism in South Africa.
Thank you to SAACI, the speakers, panellists, sponsors, and every delegate who contributed to these meaningful conversations. The work begins now as we turn these insights into action and continue building a more inclusive, resilient, and globally competitive tourism industry.
