Can smaller, data-efficient AI models bridge the gap between global technology and local languages?

South Africa's Lelapa AI is expanding its capabilities to make digital systems speak vernacular. In an interview with ITWeb TV, CEO and co-founder Pelonomi Moiloa explains how the start-up is building language infrastructure to ensure underserved African languages don't get locked out of the AI space. Lelapa AI’s machine translation models are also efficient, using 60% less compute and 60% less data than conventional approaches.

Discovery Bank has turned around from posting a R68 million loss last financial year to a normalised profit from operations of R370 million.

The digital-only bank’s move into profitability comes as it continues to increase revenue, accelerate its AI-driven capabilities and scale its customer base. The bank says its client numbers increased 26% to 1.57 million during the year, while revenue climbed 31% to R3.1 billion.

The digital bank’s growing scale and AI capabilities accelerate profitability, as it targets phase two of its “super bank” ambitions.

Major leadership shakeup at Africa Bitcoin Corporation as three senior executives face severe sanctions from the financial watchdog.

Following an enforcement order by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA), well-known tech exec Stafford Masie has stepped into the role of interim CEO.

The FSCA sanctioned former CEO Warren Wheatley, former CIO Akshay Karan, and former head of media/investor relations Tatum Keshwar-Wheatley over alleged share manipulation dating back to 2022 (when the group operated as Altvest Capital on the Cape Town Stock Exchange).
