Safari Highlights with Pravir Patel - Day 5 Morning
21 July 2025

Our last safari started off with a brief sighting of a leopard cub (cub of the Tiyani female) resting on a termite mound. The cub didn’t hang around for too long, and quickly disappeared out of sight. Mom was probably out hunting and had left the cub alone on a termite mound along the Manyeleti River.

The rest of the drive was pretty much uneventful, which could have been due to the very cold conditions and limited visibility due to the mist. The scenes while driving were amazing, but the animals just didn’t show themselves at the time.

We had just set off on drive, and not even two minutes in, our tracker spotted a female leopard (Tiyani) making her way through an open clearing near the Manyeleti River. She was zigzagging the area, looking for scrub hares and cane rats to hunt. We later lost visual of her when she moved into some thickets where we could not follow her any longer.

Towards the end of the drive we entered into a sighting of a large herd of buffalos drinking at a dam. A pride of lions (Nkuhumas) were resting a stone throw away from the herd as well. We were hoping for a bit of action, but the lions didn’t show any interest and just watched as the buffalos went about their business.

Our afternoon drive started off with a bang just like it did during the morning, but this time with a couple of herds of elephants right outside the lodge. The herds came down to the waterhole to drink just as we departed the lodge. We spent quite a long time viewing and photographing them as they drank and moved slowly through a large open area in front of the lodge.

A short while after leaving the elephants, we located the female leopard (Tiyani) we had seen during the morning drive. She was still on the hunt, and our sighting didn’t last long as she once again moved off to hunt in an area where we couldn’t follow her any longer.

From a female leopard to a male leopard, we made our way to another section of the reserve to view a large male (Timbavati) that was resting close to a dam. This particular male is not very fond of safari vehicles, and only gave us a few opportunities to view and photograph him while positioned at a distance.

This young elephant was a little too enthusiastic running into the waterhole, but it made for a great splash 💦 🐘

Safari Highlights with Pravir Patel - Day 3 Morning & Afternoon
19 July 2025

Our morning started off with a rather cute subject, a couple of lesser bushbabies was spotted peaking out of their hole on a bushwillow tree right next to the road. These little creatures aren’t seen very often, and they pose a real challenge to photograph when they are out and about.

We later entered into a sighting of a female leopard (Tiyani) as she was on the move along the Manyeleti River. She was on high alert, as there was another leopard calling a short distance away. She has a cub to protect, and an intruding female leopard can pose a real danger to her cub.

The first highlight for our afternoon safari was of a few spotted hyenas on a small open clearing close to the lodge. We were hoping that the wild dogs had come through, as we knew they were denning close by on our neighbour’s property, and that when hyenas are found in numbers in one area could mean that the wild dogs are close by. But after searching the area, we realised that there were no signs of any wild dogs and that the hyenas were just resting.

Towards sunset we entered into a sighting of a pride of lions (Nkuhuma) resting at a small waterhole with full bellies. They had finished off a kill close by and chose to spend their time resting by the water. A crash of three white rhinos made their way to drink at the waterhole, but the lions weren’t fazed and just lifted their heads to see what was happening before going back to sleep again. Only once it got dark did they get a bit more active and provided us with a few photographic opportunities.

We finished off the day with a rare sighting of a cape porcupine running along the road. The sighting lasted less than 5 seconds, but it was great to see this nocturnal creature as they aren’t seen very often.

Our first highlight for the drive was of a leopard cub (cub of the Tiyani female) on a termite mound. The sighting itself was short lived, as we didn’t spend too much time viewing it while the mother was not around. We decided to move on and rather track the mother as she was probably on the hunt.

Towards the end of the drive, the mother leopard (Tiyani) was located moving straight towards where we had left the leopard cub. When we got into the sighting, both mother and cub were reunited. The cub was in a very playful mood and both leopards had a mutual grooming session as well.

The afternoon drive started off with a bull elephant feeding on a large jackalberry tree. He provided us with great entertainment as he reached for the high branches of the tree and pulled them down, mere metres away from our vehicle.

We later received a radio message saying that a male leopard (Maribye) was located a distance away. We got into the sighting just after the sun had set and while he was hunting a herd of impalas. He soon lost interest and moved off in a total different direction, head to the ground and looking like he was in a stalking mode. At first we thought he was hunting a steenbok or duiker, but we later realised that he was on the scent of another leopard. He all of a sudden made a run for it and disappeared. We tried locating him, and while doing so bumped into another male leopard (Molwati) walking stealthily in the direction where the other male bolted to. After a while, the larger male (Molwati) caught up to the younger male and gave chase. We lost visual of them but heard them fighting somewhere in the distance. After following the sounds of the fight, we managed to relocate both leopards. The young male was up a tree while the larger male stood below. Both leopards seemed to have avoided any serious injuries, and the larger male later moved off, leaving the young male up the tree unscathed.
