Our morning started off with a rather cute subject, a couple of lesser bushbabies was spotted peaking out of their hole on a bushwillow tree right next to the road. These little creatures aren’t seen very often, and they pose a real challenge to photograph when they are out and about.

We later entered into a sighting of a female leopard (Tiyani) as she was on the move along the Manyeleti River. She was on high alert, as there was another leopard calling a short distance away. She has a cub to protect, and an intruding female leopard can pose a real danger to her cub.

The first highlight for our afternoon safari was of a few spotted hyenas on a small open clearing close to the lodge. We were hoping that the wild dogs had come through, as we knew they were denning close by on our neighbour’s property, and that when hyenas are found in numbers in one area could mean that the wild dogs are close by. But after searching the area, we realised that there were no signs of any wild dogs and that the hyenas were just resting.

Towards sunset we entered into a sighting of a pride of lions (Nkuhuma) resting at a small waterhole with full bellies. They had finished off a kill close by and chose to spend their time resting by the water. A crash of three white rhinos made their way to drink at the waterhole, but the lions weren’t fazed and just lifted their heads to see what was happening before going back to sleep again. Only once it got dark did they get a bit more active and provided us with a few photographic opportunities.

We finished off the day with a rare sighting of a cape porcupine running along the road. The sighting lasted less than 5 seconds, but it was great to see this nocturnal creature as they aren’t seen very often.

Our first highlight for the drive was of a leopard cub (cub of the Tiyani female) on a termite mound. The sighting itself was short lived, as we didn’t spend too much time viewing it while the mother was not around. We decided to move on and rather track the mother as she was probably on the hunt.

Towards the end of the drive, the mother leopard (Tiyani) was located moving straight towards where we had left the leopard cub. When we got into the sighting, both mother and cub were reunited. The cub was in a very playful mood and both leopards had a mutual grooming session as well.

The afternoon drive started off with a bull elephant feeding on a large jackalberry tree. He provided us with great entertainment as he reached for the high branches of the tree and pulled them down, mere metres away from our vehicle.

We later received a radio message saying that a male leopard (Maribye) was located a distance away. We got into the sighting just after the sun had set and while he was hunting a herd of impalas. He soon lost interest and moved off in a total different direction, head to the ground and looking like he was in a stalking mode. At first we thought he was hunting a steenbok or duiker, but we later realised that he was on the scent of another leopard. He all of a sudden made a run for it and disappeared. We tried locating him, and while doing so bumped into another male leopard (Molwati) walking stealthily in the direction where the other male bolted to. After a while, the larger male (Molwati) caught up to the younger male and gave chase. We lost visual of them but heard them fighting somewhere in the distance. After following the sounds of the fight, we managed to relocate both leopards. The young male was up a tree while the larger male stood below. Both leopards seemed to have avoided any serious injuries, and the larger male later moved off, leaving the young male up the tree unscathed.

Tiyani’s cub snacking off the freshly caught impala her mom stashed up in the tree. The first sighting we had of them was tricky when it came to photography, but sometimes you get a quick moment where everything aligns ✨

All the action for our first safari started just as the sun was going down. We entered into a sighting of four male lions (Kambula coalition) sleeping at a small dam. As they were resting, a white rhino and her tiny calf made their way to the dam as well. But the female rhino caught the lions’ scent and was hesitant to drink, as her cub was extremely vulnerable at its age with four male lions in the vicinity.

Just after the sun had gone down, one of the males made their way to the water to drink. We were hoping all four males would go drink at the same time, but they had other plans. Another male later came down to drink as well, while the others rested close by.

Our journey back to camp was nothing short of amazing, as we had spotted an African wild cat running on the road. These small cats are very rare to see and we were lucky that it soon relaxed and posed for about a minute before slowly moving off. Despite the tall grass, we managed to capture some great record images of this rare cat. And while doing so, a spotted hyena curiously came up the road to investigate.

Safari Highlights with Pravir Patel - Day 5 Morning
14 July 2025

Our only big cat sighting for the drive was of the young male leopard (Matumi) we had seen the night before. He had covered quite a bit of ground from where we had seen him before, but this is not unusual for male leopards.

For the rest of the drive we were hot on the trail of a female leopard after picking up fresh tracks for her on the road. We tracked her for quite some time but unfortunately we could not locate her.

Safari Highlights with Pravir Patel - Day 4 Afternoon

News came in that a pride of lions (Ntsevu) had killed an impala close to camp around midday. In fact, a lioness was visible from the main deck of the camp. Once we were out on drive and when we went to view them, the carcass had already been finished. Most of the lions were resting in the thickets while a couple were out in the open.

After leaving the lions, we managed to locate a female leopard (Tlebe Rocks) on the move towards some rocky outcrops. She made her way onto a couple of rocky outcrops before heading towards a drainage line to hunt some impalas. We later lost visual of her when she dipped into the drainage line and into an area we couldn’t access.

Our next highlight came in the form of a white rhino and her calf. The rhinos were making their way through a dry riverbed, digging up water just like how an elephant would dig to access fresh water. Just as we had left the rhinos, we located a male leopard (Flat Rock) watching the rhinos going about their business.

Towards the north eastern section of the reserve we entered into a sighting of four young male lions (N’waswishaka) resting at a dam. These young males could potentially be new faces at MalaMala, but are still too young to cause an upset in any of the pride dynamics.

On the way back to camp we bumped into a young male leopard (Matumi) walking right next to the road. He was busy sniffing around, most probably after picking up the scent of another leopard.

Safari Highlights with Pravir Patel - Day 4 Morning
13 July 2025

With a packed breakfast aboard our vehicle, we ventured towards the far southern reaches of the reserve to explore new areas. We were stopped in our tracks on two occasions when we spotted two leopards on the way to the southern end of the property. The first leopard (Maxims male) was walking along the Sand River on a scent marking mission. Shortly after, we bumped into an old female leopard (Lookout) walking on the road straight towards us. After viewing her meandering about on the road for a while, we decided to let her be and moved on.

Our decision to head towards the southern reaches turned out to be a fruitful decision, as we came across our first buffalo hiding in the Sand River amongst the reeds and a honey badger scampering along the road for a few seconds. We also saw a male leopard (Hanyile) resting close to one of the camps in the south.

After a lovely bush breakfast on the banks of the Sand River, we began our journey back to camp along the river, and to our surprise, we bumped into the old female leopard we had seen earlier. This time she was laying along a path leading to the river. It’s a great strategy for hunting, as animals such as impalas often use these pathways to get to the river.
