Winter camping...

With fuel prices at record heights, it's not always feasible to camp up north where winter is more timid.

So here's a few tips for cold winter camping:

*Put a cheap reflective windshield sunshade under your mattress.
Most heat loss while sleeping is into the ground, not the air. Even on a stretcher or RTT it helps a lot.

*Fill a metal water bottle with hot water before bed and throw it in your sleeping bag near your femoral artery area (inner thighs) or feet.
Way safer and longer-lasting than disposable heat packs.

*Sleep in a beanie and dry socks only.
Too many layers inside a sleeping bag can compress insulation and make you colder.

*Keep tomorrow’s clothes inside the sleeping bag overnight.
Sounds simple, but climbing into ice-cold pants at 5am destroys morale instantly.

*Put foam gym mats on vehicle floors.
Massive improvement for wagon sleeping or barefoot comfort around camp.

*Eat something fatty before bed.
Your body becomes the heater. Biltong + peanut butter works surprisingly well.

*Store lithium batteries and power stations INSIDE bedding at night.
Cold kills usable capacity hard.

*Condensation hack for RTTs:
Crack two opposite vents slightly even when freezing. Less condensation actually feels warmer because bedding stays

*If you camp often in Highveld winters:
A proper down quilt over an existing sleeping bag is usually better value than buying a huge extreme-rated sleeping bag.
