Did you know that we collect data on our trips?

As Jaws turns 50 and conversations around shark conservation gain momentum, we're reflecting on how far the science, and our own journey, has come. In 2011, Apex welcomed shark scientist David Shiffman aboard one of our expeditions while he studied under Neil Hammerschlag Hammerschlag. Today, we’re proud to still be working with Neil, with our next collaborative research project already in motion. He’s applied for the permits, and we’re excited to bring you along every step of the way.

Together, we've published numerous scientific papers that contribute to our understanding of shark behaviour and conservation. You can explore them here: https://apexpredators.com/sustainability/research-papers/

Fear may have started the conversation, but science is what now drives it forward.

This view, captured from the top deck of the Apex vessel, overlooks our shark cage which, on this particular day, was encircled by approximately ten bronze whaler sharks. With some luck, a broadnose sevengill shark may emerge from the depths to say hello - an elusive, prehistoric species. Watch closely and you might notice a rising trail of bubbles. This is a Cape fur seal making its presence known.

Guests enter a 2.8-metre-long cage, specifically designed with smooth edges to ensure the safety of surrounding marine life should any contact occur. Every element of the experience is considered - for both people and the ocean's wild residents.

Join us for a trip, and Reconnect with your Wild.

“Lando” now has his stand and an updated two tone finish with a matte lower and gloss upper . He might be finished , maybe … unless I think of something else to add while he’s drying 🤣

Feared, misunderstood, and too often portrayed as villains, great white sharks have carried the burden of the Jaws myth for decades. But the truth is far more complex.

These apex predators are intelligent, sensitive, and essential to ocean health. They're not the cold-blooded killers we’ve been taught to fear - they’re guardians of balance within our oceans.

“I had wanted to shoot a split waterline image of a great white shark and on this day at the Neptune Islands in South Australia, I got my chance.

The wind had dropped into the evening and the ocean glassed off. I needed a shark that showed non-aggressive and calm behaviour to avoid risk to myself or the animal in pulling off this image.

This shark turned up to the stern of our boat and circled around for half an hour or so whilst displaying the relaxed body language that I needed, so I made the decision to attempt the shot.

Shortly after placing my pole mounted mirrorless camera housing into the water, the shark showed some interest and cautiously approached, allowing me to quickly fire a sequence of frames, before pulling the camera safely out of the shark’s way.” - Matthew Smith

BE THE CHANGE YOU WISH TO SEE!

It will take less than 30 seconds to sign this petition. If not for you, do it for your grandchildren so they may get to see sharks and other marine wildlife which they may not, if you don't sign this petition.

We are honored to have been a part of this scientific paper that uncovers evidence of far-reaching ecosystem consequences and disruptions to the food-web due to the decline of white sharks from False Bay. The results underscore the importance of conserving apex predators for the maintenance of healthy oceans.

We are hopeful this study leads to urgent conservation action for white sharks in South Africa and beyond given the implication of these results for maintaining healthy oceans.

Meet the Locals..

Since 1996, Apex Shark Expeditions is a licensed shark cage diving tour operator. We are well known for our ecosystem styled approach to our shark diving experiences, rather than just being shark-centric, we offer our guests the chance to step back and stay naturally connected. From ubiquitous penguins; to the melee of 64,000 seals; the rush of riding alongside a pod of dolphins; to the awe of a predatory shark; our aim at Apex is to take you back to that place where you found peace and a connection with the natural world during an unprecedented time. If the Covid-19 pandemic has taught us one thing, it is how much so many of us have missed connecting with family and nature.

Do it together! Bring your family and join us on an adventure into nature.
