International Day for Biological Diversity - "Be the Change you wish to See in the World'

Do we need be reminded that the world isn’t just about forests and extinct animals – it's about the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the planet we share!

From the smallest insect to the largest predators, every one of them plays a significant role in keeping an ecosystem balanced and alive.

Happy International Day for Biological Diversity from us at Apex Shark Expeditions to you!

It’s really as simple as that.

We’re used to Sharks… but Today we had a very Different Visitor!

A tiny blue budgie flew onto our boat whilst on anchor 2km offshore. No booking, no waiver, just hello there!

Our univited guest stayed with us all the way back to harbour.

After a drink, he is now safely on his way to a sanctuary.

An Ode to the South African Navy Standby Diver

The statue that sees us off each day stands proudly on the Simon’s Town Pier, where all Apex Shark Expeditions trips depart.

It serves as a tribute to all past, present, and future South African Navy divers — a symbol of quiet strength, trust, and the unspoken bond between those who venture beneath the surface. They protect and serve with the confidence that there will always be a fellow diver watching out for them.

At Apex, we like to think he extends that watchfulness to everyone who steps onto the jetty, keeping a silent eye over all who come and go.

Introducing The Common Dolphin, Who is Anything But Common.

While they share the open ocean with fish, dolphins are mammals, more closely related to land animals such as hippos. Having evolved from land-dwelling ancestors over millions of years, they breathe air, give birth to live young, and nurse their calves.

While out at sea with us, you may witness the energy and agility of these remarkable animals as they ride alongside the vessel, reaching speeds of up to 60 km/h.

Highly social by nature, dolphins live and hunt in coordinated groups. They communicate using a combination of body language, whistles, and clicks — working together with precision when feeding.

Empty the Tanks 2026 has more locations added.

From the U.S. to Mexico, Europe, Australia, Africa, and Japan, advocates will gather outside marine parks, aquariums, zoos, and dolphinariums to speak up for dolphins and whales exploited in captivity.

Find your nearest location on the event map and join the movement.

The Island of a Thousand Tales.

While there is nothing written about the discovery of Seal Island, it holds much history, from serving as a navigational point for early settlers to serving as a hunting and harvesting ground for local Khoisan.

Today, the Island is home to anything between 60 000 to 75 000 seals at a time, it was once the perfect hunting ground for the Great White Shark, making the area around the Island famous to photograph the Great White “flying” out of the water when hunting seals – capturing the global attention for shark researchers, conservation science and documentaries like Shark Week.

The island is just one of the amazing things you will see on your trip with Apex!
