Still one of the greats

"Besides,
They'll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed,—"

This is my favorite Langston Hughes poem.

What has always stayed with me is how quietly he captures something so deeply human: the desire to belong, to be seen, and to be treated as an equal. There’s something heartbreaking about having to insist on your own humanity in the first place, yet Hughes does it without bitterness or shouting. There’s this calm confidence running through every line, like he already knows that one day the world will have to see what should have been obvious all along. That restraint is what makes the poem hit me so hard.
