Hyena vs Leopard Showdown in 🐆 The talented got up close to this incredible action whereby a female leopard attempts to reclaim her kill several times from a large spotted hyena. You can go and see Part 1 on Marlon’s profile 📷

You just never know what’s around the next corner in the bush!

Another great sighting in the Kruger National Park 🦴 These two Spotted Hyenas were devouring what was left of a big male Kudu carcass. Hyenas have incredibly powerful jaws which produce a massive amount of force in their bite. This allows them to access the nutrient rich marrow inside bones which most other animals cannot reach 🦷 Despite the bad reputation that hyenas have received, they actually catch anywhere between 65-90% of the food that they eat. Recent (and still ongoing) studies have shown that as well as having social structures as complex as primates, hyenas are also capable of providing the same level of problem-solving 🧠

Not only is winter a great time for game viewing, but also provides some beautiful photographic opportunities as nectar-feeding birds flock to flowering Aloes as pictured above 🪶 Any guesses as to which of the 21 spectacularly coloured sunbirds, occurring in Southern Africa, that this might be? Catch of the day 🐟 Still one of the most incredible sightings captured at Savanna Private Game Reserve in the Sabi Sands. This hyena was unsure of how to catch these slippery creatures at first, but once she figured it out she proceeded to catch one after the other, kill them and then stash them on the riverbank to take back to the den close by.

This all happened by chance during our morning coffee stop, when we saw the hyena approaching from the far bank. You just never know what you might find in the bush 🐾

Have you ever heard of Garonga Safari Company in the Greater Makalali Reserve? If not, best you listen up 😉 We were lucky enough to visit this beautiful property a couple of years back and it fast became one of our favourite luxury lodges in the region 🐘 It wasn’t just the delicious food, exquisite accommodation, the up close wildlife sightings and incredible knowledge of the guides, but it really came down to the staff who constantly went above and beyond. This beautiful lodge allows its guests some once in a lifetime experiences such as a bush or star bath as well as an adventurous sleep-out deck experience (don’t worry, you won’t go without your creature comforts).

Apart from their efforts to decrease their carbon footprint by installing solar panels (this accounts for 66% of Garonga’s energy needs), grey-water systems and heated pump systems as opposed to electrical geysers, they are also an active partner in a rhino conservation project which funds rhino relocations, as well as field rangers and anti-poaching K9 dog units within the Makalali Reserve 🦏 With all of that being said, they are currently running SA Residents Rates starting at R2900 per person per night for a luxury Safari tent (pictured above).

Feel free to message us to find out more.

Who Is Africa Unearthed?

Africa Unearthed was born out of a hopeless romance with the African continent and its natural, raw and untouched wild places.

With the fast-paced hustle and bustle of our day to day lives, finding places of quiet, calm and solitude, and as a result reconnecting with nature has become more of a rare occurrence.

Our team at Africa Unearthed consists of a small, owner-run team of young, dynamic individuals with a deeply routed passion for travel and the continent that we are lucky to call home. This company was born out of the want and need to share our love for this place and the wildlife and people that inhabit it, and having been fortunate enough to travel far and wide to scout out the best places, we now want to share this gift with you.

At Africa Unearthed, we strive to do our bit in order to protect our piece of paradise, so that we can share it with future generations. It is therefore instrumental that we align ourselves with companies and lodges that share similar values to us and put wildlife, environment and the community above everything else.
