🥾 TALES FROM HIKING TRAILS 🥾

I’m excited to be joining fellow hiking enthusiast and author Steve Chadwick for an afternoon of stories, experiences, questions and a few laughs as part of the Indie Authors Rise Up Book Festival.

📅 Monday, 17 August 2026
🕑 14:00
📍 Café 1865 – opposite Helderberg Hospital
🎟️ R75 at the door, including a complimentary glass of Poetry wine.

I’ll be sharing stories from my years of hiking and guiding, including plenty from the Fish River Canyon and my book Thirty Times Down – A Hiker’s Guide to the Fish River Canyon Trail.

I’ll also talk about the extraordinary June 2026 flash flood, when 96 hikers had to be evacuated from the canyon by helicopter, including the 13 members of my own group.

We’ll also venture into the Helderberg, Cape Town and Western Cape hiking scene, covering trail access, accidents, fires, wildlife, closed trails, guiding adventures and some of the more amusing things that happen when you lead people into the mountains!

Come and join us for an afternoon of hiking, adventure, stories and good conversation. 🥾⛰️

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined me at my book launch last night at Sage & Thyme Village Coffee Shop.

The turnout was fantastic, so many new faces, along with some familiar ones from the canyon and from paths crossed along the way. It meant a great deal to share the evening with you all.

As if that wasn’t enough, today being World Book Day made it even more special. My grandson decided to dress up as his grampa for school. He had the option of going as Harry Potter, but chose me instead, which I’ll happily take … especially since I’m clearly better looking than Harry Potter, albeit with slightly less hair. 🫣😁

Give him a few more years, and I’ll be taking him down into the Fish River Canyon to introduce him to a whole new world.

Thank you again to everyone who supported the launch, your presence truly made it memorable.

Hi .

Thirty Times Down – Official Book

Released on 9 February, Thirty Times Down has already exceeded my expectations. Thank you to everyone who has ordered a copy so far, your support has been overwhelming.

For many hikers, the Fish River Canyon is a dream: raw beauty, silence, heat and grit. Thirty Times Down brings that experience to life through clear guidance, honest trail notes and practical advice gathered over more than a decade of hiking the canyon.

From selecting the right gear and navigating boulder fields to understanding water levels and pacing each day, this book is designed to help you feel prepared long before your boots touch the sand. It includes accurate GPS-based data, route markers, condition insights, and essential safety and planning guidance, making it a reliable companion for both independent hikers and guided groups.

The book also features a pull-out Distance Matrix Chart detailing distances between 27 key landmarks in the Fish River Canyon.
