From Kent to Qatar - the universal language of drawing transcends languages barriers, expressing culture and context, and situating relevant design solutions developed through models and meta media. Evolving means embracing new tools of expression, while keeping connected to ‘analogue’ methods and always starting the analysis and thought processing with a sketch! Always a pleasure stepping out the studio to spend time with these vibrant, hard working students!

Inhab:t Architects Studio sending up the drone again on this site, for a new client, is a great way to close out the week! Footage is again used to guide the next session of iterative sketch roll overlays, as the contextual beauty (and constraints) are harnessed in the context of the client aspirations, collated during detailed listening and briefing sessions! Prioritising interactive client communication throughout the process is priority!

It’s been a month since the productive first series of lectures in Canterbury to kick start the next cohort of 4th year architecture design students, at University of Kent.

Urban design pedagogy importantly guides students through the process of design - incorporating the layered understanding of contextual heritage and site history, while designing to current constraints (and challenging them at the same time!), ever mindful of the evolving narratives of daily lives, as we consider future cities.

This new project about to break ground - drone footage for site analysis during the design stages to capture views and connections, and to assist site establishment. We continue to capture this footage throughout construction, packaged together as a little keep sake at the end for our clients. Just another personal touch we like to add to projects.

As a newly graduated 5th year student, I couldn’t believe it when I got a job offer at Terry Farrell + Partners after moving to London - it ended up being all that and more! The privilege of learning daily from insights into architecture, urban design and master planning, from Terry, who himself was tutored by Louis Kahn, and the opportunity to work on great projects was inspiring! A sad loss to the architecture world - one that incites a trip down memory lane of my early London days.

And that’s a wrap for this year’s lecturing! A great year encouraging and guiding students with Bob Allies, James Mcadam, Peter Wislocki and James Burland. What a rewarding year with a hard working cohort of 4th year design students, that really impressed at their final crit submissions!

1.1 billion people live in informal settlements!!

Day 1 of the World Urban Forum 12, hosted by UN Habitat in Cairo, saw the offficial opening of a full agenda of engaging sessions. It’s great to be back here as part of the South African delegation, and put minds together about all things urban, sustainable, collaborative, and built environment. This years’ theme, and discussions around localising SDG’s, fits neatly into our own mantra of ‘think global, act local’, and the next few days promise meaningful knowledge exchange, to foster change.

It will be an exciting week attending the twelfth UN-HABITAT World Urban Forum in Cairo as part of the South African delegation, engaging relevant and meaningful discussion on urban challenges. This meeting of minds is necessary not only for intervention projects and upgrading informal settlements, but for knowledge exchange on all cities and sustainable development as we as urban designers, master planners, architects and researchers plan for liveable future cities.

Resilience, problem solving, adapting to change, team work, initiative - soft skills that all the great teachers along the way place great emphasis on as necessary in today’s world. Skills that are required in daily lives in work and play. These kiddos had their cheese moved with the latest big change as they hone these soft skills through life experience in what we call the ‘global classroom’ - one for adults and kids alike, with no graduation - only continual learning. Excitement and nerves in equal measure! On to the next Team Thompson adventure that keeps the team together.

Rounding off the flight that was June with a presentation at - a discussion within the framework of that I am co-authoring a journal paper on with Matthew Barac - bringing years of Inhab:t Architects Studio and thinking together, while hearing relevant and extremely interesting research by colleagues old and new!
