Time has runaway. Tomorrow is our last day in Turkey, so here is a quick synopsis of our days from Antalya.

Antakya - day 4, Old City walking tour.

Then on to a little town called Egridir for 2 nights, a good break and some R&R. Then by coach to Konya, here we went to the Rumi Monesrty where the Whirling Dervishes started 1285. That evening we attended the Whirling Ceremony. A very moving spiritual experience.

Goreme in the next post.

Hi Guys, I'm way behind on my updates of our journey through Turkey, so I will have to do a couple of days per post to catch up.

Anatalya - day 3, a sunken city, a child's best friend ' Santa Clause' and tombs with a difference.

Kekova - This was a bustling city on the trade route, very wealthy, and very old, dates back to the Lycian times , from 500 BC. At about 530 AD there was an earthquake, the majority of the city is now underwater, between 1 and 8 meters in depth. Part of the necropolis is on dry land with a few tombs standing in shallow water.

Saint Nicolas - Nicolas was a 4th century Bishop Myra. The only Saint to be beautified in his own lifetime. There are many stories about his generosity as well as his piety.
It was the Coke-a-Cola company that gave St. Nicolas the Red outfit and the name Santa Clause in 1934 to boost their sales.

Lucian Tombs - Burials must have played a very important role in Lycian society. They carved elaborate tombs into the cliff faces and crags in the area. The were probably copies of domestic architecture with carved doors, beam ends and pitched roofs.

Anatalya - Day 2, one mountain, one ancient city: Termessos.
This ancient city was founded by the Solymi people between the 7th and 6th century BC. The occupiers successfully resisted the siege of Alexander the Great in 333 BC.
The ruins are at an altitude of 1150 meters asl, the last 600 meter climb is up a rocky path.
There has been very little archeological research and conservation carried out to date.

Anatalya - Day 1, three ancient sites.
1. Perge. Established in the 2nd or 1st century BC. The city started to decline early in the 1st century AD, around the Byzantine times and was completely abandoned by the 7th century AD.

2. Aspendos. Once the most eastern city of the kingdom of Pergamum (263 BC - 3rd century AD). During the Roman period it became an important trade centre. The magnificent theater was constructed around 162 AD and is still in use today for the annual Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival.

3. Side. Settled by Greek Colonists in the 7th century BC, burned down by the Arabs in the same century, rebuilt by the Seljuks. In the 2nd century became a center for pirates trading in slaves. It remained an important slave market under Roman rule. The Otterman style of houses is predominant now and is being renovated in the same style by the Turkish Government

Çanakkale - From this town we did the Gallipoli and Troy tours. The weather was not good, in fact it rained for the Troy tour, so not many photos.

The Gallipoi tour was very emotional, specifically for the Ausies and New Zealanders with us. ANZAC Day is a result of this fateful campaign in WW I.

Pumakkale - 'Cotton Castle'.
This area is the result of fissures in the ground forming hot springs, the water has a mixture of Carbondioxide (CO2)and Calcium (Ca), the chemicals disolve in the water at a temperature of +/- 36°C. On exposure to air and the slow flow of the water, Calciumcarbonate is deposited on the surface.
This action had been ongoing for millenia. One of the first recordings of this attraction is in 1900 BC, when the Luvis people inhabited the area
