Port Nolloth Day 9 & 10
We now start heading back and chose the West Coast Route via Port Nolloth and Doringbaai. A visit to the diamond mining town of Port Nolloth is a must for everyone’s bucket list & cannot exclude a museum tour with George, SA Navy Diver & Diamond Diver amongst other things. We had two amazing West Coast winter days, blue blue skies and no wind, spent relaxing, exploring the town and of course visiting the museum which was most interesting and fascinating to say the least.

Augrabies Day 7 and Day 8
A lunchtime arrival at Augrabies meant a visit to the falls after checking in at a comfortable cottage on a farm 5 minutes from the Augrabies National Park. Notwithstanding the drought and less water than before, the falls are still impressive. We had dinner at the a restaurant down the road. Delicious very reasonably priced food which was a refreshing experience after the Kgalagadi. On Day 8 we did a drive through the National park. Took round 5 hours and we were rewarded with a most enjoyable drive. The drive wasn’t as much about animals as it was about the spectacular scenery. The peace and tranquillity cannot be put into words. We hardly saw another car making our day even more unique. Back at the guest house we had a warm curry for supper and reflected over the amazing day we had all just experienced.

Kgalagadi Day 2 to Day 6
Our first 3 nights were spent in a self-catering cottage a few kilometres outside the Kgalagdi. This made it easy to take a drive into the park for a day and enjoy animal sightings on offer. We spent 3 nights in Kgalagadi itself – 1 at Mata Mata and 2 at the Kalahari tented camp. Enjoyable but very cold and we found the accommodation very expensive for what we got. Animal sightings were a little scarce but we were still privileged to have a good lion sighting and a very good cheetah family sighting. All in all a relaxing experience away from cell phones and hustle and bustle.

Kgalagadi & More - June 2018 Tour
Day 1 - travelled to Keimoes and stayed over at Kokerboom. A lovely, comfortable guesthouse where the hospitable owners treated us to a home cooked dinner and delicious omelettes for breakfast. Most definitely a worthwhile stay to break the long road to the Kgalagadi. We will most certainly go back.

Day 13 – Sadly our last day, time disappears when you’re having fun! Departing from Planet Baobab we headed south for Khama Rhino Sanctuary. En-route we travelled through the well-known Makgadikgadi Pans a series of pans that are the remains of what used to be a huge ancient inland ocean. The drive over the pans was an exceptional, unique experience well worth every moment of dust. After a long day we arrived at our destination and were rewarded with a White Rhino siting on the way to our camp site, completing our Big Five sightings for the trip. We set camp for the last evening of our adventure through Botswana. The next morning, we took a quick game drive before departing, in search of more Rhino. The sanctuary is home to white and black rhino as well as many other animal species which all roam free. What an apt ending to a wonderful adventure.

Day 11 & 12 – On leaving Kasane we headed south for Planet Baobab, situated in the centre of the Makgadikgadi National Park. The camp is built around massive Baobab trees. Over the next few days we were privileged to see some of the biggest Boabab’s we have ever seen. The next day some took a trip to the Nxai Pan National Park while a small group ‘reckied’ the route planned for the next day to ensure the pans were not too wet too travel over. The pub and beautiful swimming pool were enjoyed by all to cool day after a hot day.

Botswana Day 8 9 10 – We re-entered Botswana and headed for our camp just outside Kasane. The next morning was spent in Chobe National Park experiencing an abundance of animal life difficult to match anywhere else if Botswana. We had a brief Leopard siting and to add to the excitement we followed fresh Lion tracks for nearly an hour (they were obviously hunting) but were not lucky enough to spot them. In the late afternoon an amazing sunset cruise on the Chobe River was enjoyed. Again large numbers of bird and wild life, including elephant, hippo and buffalo, were viewed from up close. This incredible day ended with a group supper at a little restaurant down the road – lovely meal and excellent value for money. The last day some of us spent relaxing around the camp and stocking up inn Kasane while others took a shuttle across to Zimbabwe to visit the magnificent Victoria Falls.

Botswana Day 6 & 7 - Our departure from Drotsky Cabins took us across the border into Namibia. Our campsite for 2 days was set in a small riverine forest lying on the banks of a tranquil backwater lake of the Zambezi. Sunrise from canoes was an incredible experience - the bird life was amazing and we were watched by hippos to ensure we did not en-crouch on their territory. Most special was the tranquility of the surroundings which brought peace and happiness to us all. Drinks at sunset on the large wooden deck with stunning lake views ended a perfect day.

Day 4 & 5 - An early morning bird watching trip by boat with an excellent river guide, Ray, was well worth getting up in the cold for. We (or Ray actually) spotted birds and animals we would never have seen any other way – Kingfishers (all sorts), Carmine Bee-eater, Heron, Crane, the endangered Skimmer and of course the magnificent Fish Eagle. A close up encounter with an Elephant added excitement to the morning and the most special was a rare sighting of the extremely shy Sitatunga antelope (Water Kudu) – Africa’s only try amphibious antelope dwelling only in swamps and wetlands. A sunset cruise when some tried their hand at Tiger fishing (with no luck) included a special experience when Ray put out fish for the Fish Eagle to catch right alongside the boat. That majestic bird swooping down into the water only a few meters away, for his catch, is something you cannot put into words. The cruise ended with a goodbye from “our” elephant as the sun set.
