As many of you may have seen in the news, the Bushveld has experienced an unprecedented amount of rainfall, with approximately 250-350mm (10-14 inches) falling over the last few days. While we, as farmers, are always thankful for the rain, it has unfortunately led to flooding in our area. We’ve also suffered significant damage to our crop farms.
Big areas are now cut off from the outside world, with roads being flooded and inaccessible.
Our thoughts are with all the farmers who have experienced severe losses, particularly those near the rivers.
In addition, the Molatedi Dam in the Marico River, which was built in 1984 and has only overflowed once, back in 2000/01, is now standing at 135%. This dam supplies water to our irrigation farm, and also Gaborone (the Capital of Botswana) and a huge amount of water is now flowing past our farms along the riverbank.
While we anticipate that the rain will benefit our grazing, it will also make hunting more challenging this year due to the long grasses and thicker vegetation.
Farming is definitely not for the faint of heart.
