We offer a variety of programmes catering for all ages and fitness levels with a focus on providing informative conservation-based tours that are educational and enriching for guests and our animals. Time frames vary between 1 hour tours offered right throughout the day, to more exclusive leisurely programmes.

The Wild Cat Experience is a guided tour of the centre. During this educational and informative 1 hour program, you will visit all our Indigenous South African wild cats and other wildlife led by our experienced tour guides. You will learn about the conservation efforts that Tenikwa is involved in, and be introduced to environmentally-friendly practices. This program is ideal for families, small and large groups as well as the disabled.

Do you have children between the ages of 6 to 12? Our EcoKidz Family Challenge is specifically designed to keep your kids engaged as we explore various conservation challenges. During the fun-filled EcoKidz program, you will meet some very amazing EcoCatz who will challenge your family to learn more about their furry friends in the wild and instil a sense of conservation from an early age. At the end of the tour, after pledging their commitment to conservation values, the children receive a certificate.

Our Private Photographic Tour is a leisurely and exclusive opportunity to capture the magic of our wild cats, secretly and seldom seen. This program is specially designed to provide you with ample time and opportunity to photograph the various species in natural settings, an opportunity you may not get when visiting a game reserve.

The Tenikwa Cheetah Walk is a unique and powerful experience when you join our cheetahs on their daily outing through indigenous Tsitsikamma Forest and Cape Floral Fynbos. Our cheetah walk program coincides with the naturally-active times of cheetahs in the wild. The walk forms a crucial element of enrichment for our cheetahs. Enrichment provides exercise and promotes the physical and mental well-being of our cheetahs in captivity. No harness, No touching, just cheetahs having fun in the forest. The Cheetah Walk program is suitable for individuals older than 16, with a height requirement of 1.5 metres. This program includes the Wild Cat Experience Tour to see all our cats.

The popular Cheetah Walk can be combined with our Private Photographic Tour known as the Photographic Combo.

Tenikwa adheres to a strict code of conduct to ensure that visitors experience a safe, conservation-based wildlife encounter that exceeds global animal welfare standards.

We do not allow guest contact with our cats. All our programs offer a unique opportunity to learn about wildlife’s struggle, why they are disappearing from our landscape and what we can do to make a difference.

Our visitor amenities include:
Secure and safe parking for cars, buses and coaches.
Chester’s Coffee Shop where you can savour fresh bakes and a variety of South African favourite light meals and beverages.

ROBBERG NATURE RESERVE: Did you know? Robberg is not only a nature reserve & national monument, but also a World Heritage Site. More than just a pretty face, rocks on the peninsula date back 120 million years, to the break-up of Gondwanaland and evidence of middle and later Stone Age inhabitation has been found in a few of the caves along the peninsula.

Review: Revved up for adventure: Navigate into the heart of Addo with Crisscross Adventures

For those who enjoy the more adventurous side of life, Crisscross Adventures-Addo is a definite must. Personally, I like to try everything at least once and it doesn’t take too much convincing.

With this in mind, my colleague and I found our way along the R335 to one of the Eastern Cape’s best kept secrets, the Sundays River Valley, which is also home to Crisscross Adventures.

Last month, we enjoyed Crisscross Adventures Addo River Safari and this time around, our choice of adventure was the guided quad-bike tour. Once again, Crisscross Adventures did not disappoint, as this exhilarating activity was one of the most memorable experiences that I have ever had.

Owner, Chris Pickels, has followed his childhood ambition of ‘living the dream’. Today, that is exactly what he and his wife Terri are doing out in Addo.

Thrilled with our decision, we arrived at the Crisscross Adventures headquarters just off Addo Village. We were greeted by one of their lovely guides Chenjerayi, where he gave us a briefing on what could be expected from our trip.
All safety equipment is included along with refreshments. I recommend that you wear clothes that you don’t mind getting a little bit of Addo dust on, as you will get a little dirty along the way.

With great enthusiasm, we were ready to depart on our adventure. This particular tour offers guests the opportunity to see some of Addo’s most spectacular environments on automatic quad-bikes, which, I must say, are extremely easy to drive.

We followed some of the historical trails first used by the early Settlers, crisscrossing through Valley Bushveld to the magnificent Sundays River through to the beautiful citrus orchards.

Having ticked-off yet another adventure, I am already planning my next one with Crisscross Adventures. Crisscross Adventures encourages visitors to have a holistic experience of the diversity through their range of tours and packages.

To book your next adventure, contact Crisscross Adventures on 083 330 0480 or view their website www.crisscrossadventures.co.za.

Walker the Tenikwa Serval

Hi my name is Walker and I am a Serval residing at Tenikwa raising awareness about Servals. Teaching people about us and how important we are in the savanna and wetland ecosystem where we are normally found to accomplish our role in maintaining the ecosystem balance.

We are very lovely unique cats, some confuse us for young leopards, yet we differ in spots and size. Leopards have rosettes ring-like spots; we have bold black spots like the cheetah but with big ears that both these cats do not have. We have a small, delicate head and extremely large ears set on an elongated neck, long slim legs (hind legs longer than front), long slender body and a short tail. Our ears are black on the back with a distinctive white spot and the tail has 6 or 7 black rings and a black tip. Our coat colour is pale yellow with black markings, either of large spots that tend to merge into longitudinal stripes on the neck and back, or of numerous small spots, which give a speckled appearance.
We are active from early morning to about 10am, and active once more from 4pm into the evening.

Our Challenge;
Our greatest challenge is our skin; spots on our coats are sometimes marketed as young leopards or cheetah skins and can attract a hefty price on the black market. Also our instinctive love for birds and tendency to raid poultry houses makes us a target for farmers. Sadly, we are no longer found in heavily populated areas. We are also trapped, snared and poisoned for use in traditional medicines, traditional practices and garments. We still in this wonderful world thanks to Conservationists, Environmentalist (Ecologists), natural habitats that are still intact, awareness and rehabilitation centres like Tenikwa Wildlife Centre amongst many others taking good care of us.
A more recent threat is the introduction of the Savannah Cat to the pet trade. Savannah cats are a cross between a Serval and a domestic cat. So now we have to watch out for the contamination of our pure blood lines in the wild.

You are welcome to come see us in any of our tours especially within the EcoKidz family challenge; http://tenikwa.com/ecokidz-family-challenge/ , if you are visiting the Garden Route with your family.

Did You Know?
The Serval has a remarkable jumping talent that supersedes most cats in comparison to size in relation to jumping prowess. It can do a vertical leap from a stationary position to an approximate 3 meter level with ease, to catch a bird in mid-flight for example.

Big Cats - Amazing Facts!

They say cats have nine lives – but, for many of these animals, that number may be dwindling. Man’s obsession with Big Cats has pushed many species towards endangerment. The good news is that conservation efforts across the globe are paying off and paving the way for more wildlife protection initiatives.

Here are some interesting (even surprising) facts about big cats:

1. “Big Cat” is an informal term used to describe larger species of wild cats.
2. There’s a reason cheetahs look so much alike. Cheetahs are one of the hardest species to distinguish apart from one another – and that’s because they’re virtually genetic clones. The entire species was almost wiped out by the last ice age, and a small number of surviving cats interbred to maintain their species.
3. Lions with black manes are alpha males. Science has shown that a dark-maned lion has higher testosterone levels compared to other males. That’s not all he has going for him, though – there’s a higher chance of recovery from injury and his cubs are more likely to survive. No wonder lionesses are a fan of the dark manes.
4. Leopards are astoundingly strong. Kilogram for Kilogram, leopards are the strongest of their feline peers. They’re smart too. They often climb trees while carrying their heavy prey to ensure the competition (like lions and hyenas) don’t steal their supper.
5. Caracals are Diurnal as they are active in twilight and early hours of the morning, which means they sleep during the day and hunt at night. You guessed it—they hunt for small nocturnal animals like rats, birds and even small deer. They are solitary, which means they like to live alone. Sometimes they hunt with a mate.

That’s right; the iconic train most Bay locals grew up with and fondly called the Apple Express is letting off steam once again after many years and the excitement in the Nelson Mandela Bay is tangible, it is real. So real that it took only 9 minutes before the first train was completely sold out!...

ATOM marketing was started by Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre a wildlife tourist facility based in Plettenberg Bay.
They moved away from general brochure distributors due to the fact that brochure boards have become over crowded with no push for activities.

In 2014 we started Atom Marketing focused on marketing and highlighting the top activities in specific areas through some of the top accommodation establishments in The Garden Route, Eastern Cape and Klein Karoo.

The Importance of Marketing in Tourism!

Destinations conjure up images in traveler's minds that can lure them to visit or keep them away. Lets face it, it's competitive out there, especially in tourism - Your marketing strategy and presence needs to be effective, work for you and reach YOUR identified target market.
