“The Garden of the Garden Route” welcomes you to the area the ancient San people called the “place of many waters.”

This land lies between the sea and the Tsitsikamma Mountains and stretches from the Bloukrans River in the West to Clarkson in the East. Beautiful indigenous forest, protected by the State, is home to centuries old trees such as Yellowwood, Stinkwood, Hard Pear, Ironwood, Kamassi an

d many others. Tsitsikamma is a khoi word meaning "place of abundant or sparkling water". The region stretches from the Bloukrans River in the west to Eerste Rivier in the east, is bordered on the north by the imposing Tsitsikamma mountains and in the south by the Indian Ocean. The area is covered in large tracts of indigenous forest, commercial plantation and Fynbos. Deep river gorges cleft the plateau as they make their way down to the sea, creating spectacular waterfalls and deep kloofs. A mild all year round climate allows one to make the most of all the outdoor activities that are on offer, whilst a high rainfall ensures the lushness of vegetation that the area is renowned for. Storms River Village stemmed from a shooting box built by TH Duthie in 1841, then developed into a construction camp for the builders and was declared a crown village in 1885. It offers a couple of small shops; postal agency, liquor store, police station, curio shop, various restaurants and a choice of accommodation options. Tsitsikamma National Park, declared in 1964, encompasses a marine reserve made up of 80km of coastline and offers the visitor magnificent scenery, walks, a small beach, restaurant and shop. Kouga Wilderness is a family-run farm that forms part of the Baviaanskloof mega reserve and is nestled in the Kouga mountains about 28km north of the town of Joubertina on the R62.

Accommodation is set in magnificent landscapes and consists of a farmhouse, two cottages, a campsite and a secluded bush camp.

Numerous adventure activities are offered including spectacular hiking trails, 4x4 routes, seasonal fruit picking, mountain bike routes and fishing.

It is a working farm with fruit trees, livestock and the harvesting of honeybush tea. Farming can be observed at close quarters and is particularly interesting during harvesting time.

Swim in natural crystal clear pools or in our swimming pool or try catching Black Bass in the nearby Kouga River. Explore the mountain streams in search for the rare redwing fish or the very scarce, indigenous Galaxias Zebratus, or identify some of the variety of birds seen on the farm such as the Fish eagle, Knysna- and Vleiloerie.

There are a lot of pictures of the waterfall on the Waterfall Train in the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park, but not a lot of people have seen it from above.

After extensive renovations, the three suspension bridges at Storms River Mouth in the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park recently reopened.

The original suspension bridge over the river mouth was built in 1969 by Jacky de Vos, while the two "new" bridges on the approach were built in 2009. All three bridges have now been redesigned and rebuilt, and they are looking really stunning.

This article dates back to 1982, when the Bloukrans Bridge was still under construction. At that stage, the Storms River Bridge, completed in 1954, had everybody in awe and it was hard to grasp that you would be able to fit Storms River Bridge, with its deck span of 186 metres, neatly between the two arch springing points of the Bobbejaansrivier Bridge, which was still under construction by the Murray & Roberts-Concor team.

The Bobbejaansrivier Bridge with its deck span of 286 m will, in its turn, roughly fit between the springing points of the Bloukrans Gorge Bridge. The Bloukrans Bridge was at that stage the largest concrete arch bridge in Africa and the fourth largest in the world.

"So what is the accommodation on the Tsitsikamma Trail like? Honestly- totally deluxe. Since MTO Trails took over, they have built gorgeous new cabins and A-Frames which feel like those trending eco accommodation escapes that are so popular at the moment. The trail takes up to 24 people, so you will be sharing the facilities with fellow hikers. But if your group is 6 people, you should be able to have a 6-sleeper cabin or the 3x2 sleeper A-Frames to yourselves. Each camp has two toilets and two donkey boiler showers so you can have a hot shower at the end of your day of hiking."

Kasi Corner was born out of a very difficult time when the Tourism industry was hit hard with strict Covid lockdown periods in South Africa.

Both Jakes and Ncedi, who have been working in the hospitality and restaurant industry for over 20 years, suddenly had no work.

With a broken umbrella, a black cast iron pot and Umngusho (local food) Kasi corner was started in the beautiful Storms River Township in Tsitsikamma. With the help of the generous community, through the be Kind SA inititaive, it has grown into a beautiful restaurant where you can meet the local people, enjoy delicious food and overlook the majestic Tsitsikamma Mountains in the background.
