Everyone’s looking for the Big Five, but have you thought to look up?

For bird lovers, there’s a whole other side of the Western Cape worth discovering. And why not turn it into a birdwatching road trip?

🌿 Start in Tulbagh, where you might spot Cape Sugarbirds and Malachite Sunbirds among the valley’s flowering fynbos. Spend a few days exploring the area and discovering its birdlife.

🦅 Then head into the Ceres Karoo, where the adventure continues at Inverdoorn.

The wider Karoo environment surrounding Inverdoorn supports more than 165 native bird species, including Verreaux’s Eagles, Pale Chanting Goshawks and Cape Eagle-Owls.

Tulbagh has a souvenir you can plant 🌱

Spring is here, and Tulbagh is home to some fascinating indigenous plant life. In fact, the rare Ixia vinacea calls Tulbagh home and this is the only place in the world where it naturally occurs.

While you won’t necessarily find rare species like this for sale, it’s a good reason to stop at Tulbagh Kwekery and learn a little more about what grows in this part of the Cape.

The family-run nursery grows much of its stock locally, and the team can help you find an indigenous plant or something suited to your garden back home.

Not set on a specific w**e?
Tulbagh W**ery dates back to 1906 and offers a broad range of cultivars and styles. Choose any five w**es for R50 and start discovering what you enjoy. PS: Look out for CCM - a w**e with a very Tulbagh name.

Interested in South African w**e history?
Theuniskraal W**es’s Cape Riesling has been part of its story since 1948, with generations of the Jordaan family behind the farm. Taste the w**es, but ask about the history too.

Want to go beyond the tasting room?
At Oudekloof W**e Estate, w**e can become part of a bigger adventure, with ways to explore the landscape on foot, by tractor or with Tulbagh W**e Walk .
