🦈 “How Close Is Too Close?”
How close would you be comfortable getting to a shark? 🦈
2 metres?
1 metre?
Or close enough to look straight into its eyes? 👀

At Aliwal Shoal, encounters with sharks can be remarkably intimate — but the magic is in respecting the animal and allowing it to remain wild.
This isn't about dominating the shark.
It's about entering their world.

Tag the diver who would absolutely love this encounter. 🤿👇

The Ocean Is Worth Fighting For 🌍🌊
Aliwal Shoal is one of those places that reminds us why ocean conservation matters.

A Marine Protected Area.
A recognised Hope Spot.
A haven for sharks and marine life.
And an extraordinary place to experience the ocean firsthand.

But protection doesn't happen simply because a line is drawn on a map. It requires awareness, responsible tourism, scientific understanding and people who care enough to protect what they experience.

At African Watersports, we believe diving should inspire conservation.
Come and see Aliwal Shoal for yourself — and discover why this incredible piece of ocean deserves our respect.

🦈 Dive it. Love it. Protect it.

🦈When these yellowtail kingfish thugs take over 😎
When the Blacktip or Yellowtail Kingfish Mafia decides to monopolise the bait stem… things can get a little chaotic! 😂
One minute you’re enjoying the shark action, the next it’s “EVERY SHARK FOR HIMSELF!” 🦈💨
No queues. No manners. No sharing. It can look like pure underwater mayhem as this Mafia moves in and takes control! 🤣
Look again….admire nature at its best!!

🦈Sharks Need Protection — Not Fear 🦈

Imagine descending into the blue and watching a shark glide effortlessly past you.
No bait. No feeding. No chasing.

Just a wild animal behaving naturally in its own environment. That's what responsible shark diving is about — changing perceptions through experience and education.
Aliwal Shoal provides extraordinary opportunities to encounter sharks in the wild, including ragged-tooth sharks, blacktip sharks and other species that call these waters home.

At African Watersports, we believe that the more people understand sharks, the more people will want to protect them.

🦈 Meet them. Understand them. Protect them.

🦈 Hope Has A Home 💙
Mission Blue identifies Hope Spots as ocean areas that are especially important to marine health and where scientific evidence, conservation priorities and community support can help strengthen protection.
Aliwal Shoal Reef is recognised within this global network because its offshore reef system supports exceptional biodiversity and forms part of a protected marine environment on South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal coast.
The reef provides habitat, feeding areas and shelter for sharks, rays, turtles, reef fish and many other species. Its ecological value makes research, monitoring, responsible tourism and public education important parts of long-term conservation.
Visiting Aliwal Shoal responsibly is therefore more than a recreational experience: it is an opportunity to learn how healthy reef ecosystems function and to support the local stewardship needed to safeguard this Hope Spot for the future.
🌊 Explore. Respect. Protect.
Join African Watersports and experience the incredible marine life of Aliwal Shoal.
