Deep in the spectacular Maluti Mountains of Lesotho, you’ll find Katse Dam, one of the most impressive engineering projects in the region.
And the numbers are pretty incredible:
💦 185 metres high – roughly the height of a 60 storey building
📏 710 metres long across the top
🌊 Holds up to 1.95 billion cubic metres of water
🏔️ The reservoir covers around 35.8 km²
🚧 Construction began in 1991 and was completed in 1997
The dam forms a key part of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, supplying water to South Africa while also contributing to hydro-electric power generation in Lesotho.
Water from Katse is transferred through an incredible network of tunnels towards South Africa, helping supply the Vaal River system and, ultimately, the water needs of Gauteng.
But beyond the engineering and impressive statistics, there’s something wonderfully humbling about seeing Katse Dam surrounded by the vast mountains of Lesotho.
