Life in Underberg – Part 4: A Community That Supports Us ❤️

When you first arrive in Underberg, you might think it is a small town with just a few shops. But look a little closer, and you realise how much is here — and how much the local businesses contribute to the community.

Clouds of Hope works with many local *service providers*, and many support us by offering preferential or reduced rates. The contractor register also shows a wide network of service providers connected to Clouds of Hope.

There are also businesses and local people who support Clouds of Hope in very practical ways.
Underberg Spar provides weekly bakery donations, Pevensey provides eggs, and local farmers donate meat.
Underberg Dairy donates cheese, maas and yoghurt, while Greg Johnson donates wood, helping keep the children warm during the cold Underberg winters.

The BE YOUR OWN HERO sustainable garden at Reichenau Farm supplies fresh vegetables to Clouds of Hope and also supports the school.

These contributions show that Underberg is more than just a place with shops and businesses. It is a community where people use what they have to help others.

And sometimes, it is these everyday acts that make the biggest difference. ❤️

❄️ We could well be seeing spring in with a snowfall! ⛄

❄ ADVANCE SNOW FORECAST: Snow on the radar for SA and Lesotho this week – Mpumalanga and Gauteng showing but very light and the N3 around Mooi River is showing more than a little snowfall possible. The Himeville Museum and Fort is a beautifully preserved heritage site featuring the original 1899 fort and prison, along with an impressive collection of exhibits showcasing the history and cultures of the region. Each room highlights a different era or theme — from early settlement and farming to education, communication, and everyday life.

A key feature of the museum is its representation of the diverse communities that shaped the area. Exhibits include Stone Age fossils and artefacts, Khoi/San history with nearby rock art sites, Boer War and World War displays, wildlife, traditional tools, the early post office and telephone exchange, an old schoolroom, and an original prison cell. The central courtyard offers a peaceful, shaded garden space for visitors to rest.

The museum is well maintained and supported by knowledgeable staff who provide helpful insights into the area’s past.

9 Stoney Way Cottage is a delightful self-catering retreat in Underberg, ideally located near scenic farmland, majestic mountains, the main road, and the heart of Underberg town.

The open-plan living area includes a fully equipped kitchen with modern amenities, such as a gas stove, oven, toaster, kettle, microwave, coffee machine, fridge-freezer, cutlery, and crockery. A 4-seater dining table is centrally placed for shared meals. The adjoining lounge area offers plush seating, a wood-burning fireplace, and a smart TV. Complimentary Wi-Fi is also available.

Sliding doors lead from the living area to a covered patio, furnished with outdoor seating and a portable braai, perfect for relaxing or dining al fresco. Guests can enjoy the beautifully maintained garden and shared access to a swimming pool. Secure on-site parking is provided, and the cottage is equipped with an inverter to ensure uninterrupted power supply during outages.

Pets are welcome by arrangement, making this a perfect getaway for the whole family.
