Safari Highlights with Pravir Patel - Day 1 Afternoon
08 August 2025

Our first safari started off with a small herd of elephants close the lodge, followed by a crash of white rhinos. We witnessed some incredible interaction between a young rhino and a large male. At first the mother rhino was making a hissing sound whenever the large male got too close to the youngster, in a way warning the male to not interfere. After a while, both the youngster and the large male interacted briefly by making contact with each other, without any form of aggression from the male. The mother didn’t intervene and continued to feed close by.

Towards sunset we entered into a sighting of a female leopard (Laluka) on the move. She was walking through some thickets before she made her way onto a termite mound. After scanning the area from the mound, she made her way down and towards a herd of impalas, but soon lost interest and began to stalk a grey duiker just after the sun went down. Her hunting efforts were unsuccessful, as the duiker eventually caught sight of the leopard busy stalking up to it.

Have you ever seen a baby rock dassie? 🥹 These adorable little ones are called pups, and despite their guinea-pig-like appearance, their closest living relatives are actually elephants and manatees! 🐘

Rock dassies, or rock hyraxes, may be small, but they’re tough — thriving in rocky habitats where they can quickly dart into crevices to escape predators.

After hearing impala alarm calling we quickly heard hyenas vocalizing as well. We found part of a clan eating an impala, quick and effective. But always on the lookout, because it seemed like they’re not the ones who made the kill 🍖

As much as big cats were on the hit list for our photographic safari at in their overnight hide, we thoroughly enjoyed photographing the many herds of zebras that came down to drink. They are generally very skittish animals when they come down to drink, and whenever a dove took off close to the water, the zebras would scatter within a second.
