❄️ Knot Xtreme Boat Trips – Winter Break Notice ❄️

Brrrr… even we’re not that Xtreme! 🥶

Knot Xtreme Boat Trips will be closed from June until September for our winter break. During this time, our boat will be getting a little TLC so she’s fresh, fabulous, and ready for the new season! 🚤✨

We’ll be back when the sun is shining, the water is sparkling, and everyone’s ready for some not-so-extreme fun again! ☀️

Today on the Berg River at De Plaat, I was lucky enough to photograph a beautiful Eurasian Curlew 🐦

This large migratory wader travels all the way from Europe and northern Asia to spend the summer in South Africa. With its incredibly long, down-curved bill, it probes the mud for worms, crabs and other small invertebrates along our estuaries.

The Eurasian Curlew is listed as Near Threatened globally, mainly due to habitat loss, which makes every sighting along the Berg River even more special.

Grateful for moments like these in Velddrif — nature on our doorstep never disappoints. 🌊✨

Sometimes you have to look a little closer… 👀✨

Hidden in the reeds is my absolute favourite bird — the tiny Malachite Kingfisher. 💙

It’s not loud. It’s not obvious.
You won’t always see it at first glance.

But when you slow down… when you really look… there it is — a flash of turquoise and orange, something so small yet unbelievably beautiful.

Nature reminds us that the most precious things in life aren’t always the biggest or the boldest. Sometimes they’re quiet. Sometimes they’re hidden. And sometimes you have to be patient enough to notice them.

Take time to look for the little things. They’re often the most beautiful. 💫

There are some places that just get into your heart… and for me, that place is Velddrif 💙

After more than 19 years living here, I still can’t get enough of it. Every single day brings its own kind of beauty. From the big trawlers coming in at Laaiplek, to the fishermen and kids working together along Bokkomlaan, cleaning nets and preparing the day’s catch — it’s a way of life that’s real, raw, and deeply special.

Watching the boats arrive with mullet for bokkoms, seeing the harbour come alive near the factory, and being surrounded by incredible birdlife… it’s something you never grow tired of.

This little town has a rhythm and soul all of its own — and I feel truly blessed to call it home.

✨ What a special Saturday on the river! ✨

One of the absolute highlights was spotting the rare and magnificent Goliath Heron — a sighting that never gets old. In fact, in the 5 years I’ve been running trips on the Berg River, I’ve only seen this incredible bird three times!

The Goliath Heron is the largest heron in the world, usually found in wetlands, estuaries, and rivers across sub-Saharan Africa. They don’t exactly “migrate” long distances like some birds, but they do move around depending on water levels, food availability, and seasonal changes — which makes sightings like this extra special and unpredictable.

We also enjoyed amazing sightings of sandpipers, plovers, kingfishers, plenty of flamingos 🦩, pelicans, and more. The river was truly alive!

Every trip is different… always something new to discover, always something to appreciate. That’s the magic of the Berg River. 💙
