We'll give you the benefit of the doubt this time, Durban is a hard nut to crack. However with all hard nuts you just need the right tools. That's where we come in. Get Cultur-ed is a movement designed to ge

t locals and visitors to engage with Durban in a more diverse way culturally, socially and intellectually. Our first goal is to get more of you out there taking advantage of the really awesome initiatives and events currently going on. Our promise is to keep you informed. You just need to promise to not be afraid of the rain.

THIS IS A BIG ONE!

South Africa's official entry to the 2018 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Film arrives at KZNSA Gallery in Glenwood with the film titled 'Inxeba (The Wound)' which is based on a Xhosa initiation ritual.

The film is one of the many incredible productions being screened across the city during Durban Gay & Le***an Film Festival.

KZNSA Gallery has the pleasure of hosting Award-winning South African movie Inxeba (The Wound) which addresses issues of sexual orientation, love and notions of masculinity in the context of the Xhosa initiation practices. It has received global praise but also attracted condemnation from some traditionalists on the grounds that it deals with subject matter which is considered taboo. See the movie. MOVIE MONDAY !

UPRIZE has finally made it's way to Durban. Awarded the best South African feature documentary at the Jozi Film Fest and essential viewing for ALL South Africans.

The film explores the world that shaped the students of ’76 and how those students transformed that world. On the morning of June 16, 1976, students gathered to protest against the use of the Afrikaans language as a medium of instruction in schools.

What started out as a planned peaceful march turned into a bloody confrontation by the police. The student protests spread to other parts of South Africa causing economic instability which rapidly plunged the country into crisis. The Soweto uprising also became inspiration for novels, songs, films and young activists around the world.

Facebook event notifications can get a little abusive from time to time but there's one notification that feels more like a hug from Mother Africa herself.

It happens once a month at the Ethiopian food haven Habesha Cafe and it's called Something Afrikan. Do your Soul a favour and remember this one.

Now when you walk up/down Helen Joseph Road and you wonder what's going on in that afro-eccentric little corner, don't just curiously stare, come in. It's a really special place with a pretty awesome crowd.

SOMETHING AFRIKAN?

Think of it as a movement bringing together different representations of art in one place whilst serving as a platform for underground and upcoming artists. It's all about promoting cultural awareness and diversity.

But let's not get overly intellectual about it, it's all about sharing a space with creative Souls and people coming together to create diversity in our little part of the world, Durban.

So come be excited with us about what these guys are getting up to!

AFRI CINE Nights Vol. 6 | 28 SEP 2017

While we enjoy a good film with an intimate crowd these AFRI CINE nights are just too awesome not to share. If you've missed the first 5, do yourself a favour and don't miss this one. We're pretty amped about it ourselves!

THE FILM: Timbuktu, directed by Abderrahmane Sissako, is centred around a Malian cattleman and his family as they face the wrath of Islamic fundamentalists after a tragic accident.

YOUR HOSTS : AFRI CINE strives to present high quality contemporary African film to the local audience and is centred around the core values of promoting African cinema with ethical screening practices.

FOOD : There will be wraps! And not just any wraps, these are some sort of high powered magical wraps, reserved for the evolved palate, alchemically created by the peeps at Fortune Coffee Forever.

Does that conversation sound too familiar? Well not for long! Menzi Maseko will be breaking it down for us at the Ethiopian foodie heaven that is Habesha Cafe in Glenwood today from 14h00 — 18h00.

The talk will cover Afro-Centricity and Afrikology and how they relate to the ideals of Black Consciousness. Selected music from the Black World will be played in between the lectures. As well as explorations into the Intellectual Foundations and principal precepts of Black Consciousness and Pan Africanism.

What do we get up to at Get Cultur-ed? Well we start the day by putting on some really comfortable shoes, picking up our morning staple at Falafel Fundi and then hitting the city on foot.

Something deep within us feels the need to connect with the local movers and shakers of Ethekwini. As a result we're slowly becoming pretty clued up on whats going down in Durban and we wanna share that with you.

INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE 101

Imphepho [Helichrysum Species (African Sage)]

The smoke released when burning Imphepho is used as a sacred incense to cleanse energy and as an offering when praying. Traditionally Imphepho is burned on a potsherd when offered to the ancestors.

The medicinal uses of the African Sage include: antiseptics, insecticides, anti-inflammatory and pain relieving.

The parts of the plant used are predominately the leaves, stems, flowers and sometimes the roots.
