My soul cries! There were more than 250,000 wild lions roaming the African plains. This is not a fairy-tale, this is how the world was 50 years ago. There are now less than 20,000.

With a decline in the lions’ population there’s a real concern for the future of the wild lions in the world. The decline is mostly due to habitat loss, human-animal confrontation, and legal and illegal hunting.

Black backed jackals are a widely distributed species that are known for their cunning and daring. They are often seen nipping in to steal a morsel from Lions on a kill. Mainly nocturnal but seen regularly during the day, this handsome animal has a call to remember. The Black-backed Jackal feeds on small mammals, reptiles, birds, eggs, carrion and fruit. They do scavenge but are hunters in their own right.

Lower Sabie, Sunset Dam: White Faced Ducks are a highly social species. Mutual preening is highly developed and is important for permanent pair bonding.

The adult males have the front half of their head and throat white and the rest of their head and neck are black with white patches on the underside of the neck. The female is similar but the front of the head and neck is spot tinged with rust colour.

Although they have the long neck and long legs of other tree ducks, little time is spent perched in trees as they prefer sand banks. Their behaviour is more like a goose or swan than a typical duck. Photo: Ann Evans

Baobab tree - Photo: Ann Evans, KNP
Kruger National Park is home to 147 mammal species, over 500 bird species between October and March when the bird population swells by approximately 200 migrant species, and 404 identified species of trees.

This giant, strange looking tree has nine different species and belongs to the genus Adansonia cluster of trees. There are only two species native to the African mainland, which are the Adansonia Digitata and the Adansonia Kilima. Six of the other species can be located in Madagascar and another in Australia.

The baobab tree, also known as the tree of life, can grow to enormous sizes and can live up to 3,000 years. It has many useful properties and acts like a huge succulent as its trunk is packed with up to 80% water. San Bushmen relied on these trees for water when the rivers started to run dry and there was no rain. One baobab tree contains 4,500 liters (or 1,189 gallons) of water. The centre of the tree can also give people shelter.

The bark and inner parts of the tree is soft, fibrous, and resistant to fire. It can be used to weave clothes and rope. Other parts of the baobab can also be used to make rubber, soap, and glue. The leaves and part of the bark is used in traditional medicine.

The baobab tree has a unique fruit that resembles an oblong velvet covered gourd. The fruit has big black seeds and it has a slightly powdery tart pulp in the center. There are a lot of health benefits that can be gained from eating the fruit and leaves with its high levels of potassium, iron, vitamin C and calcium . The young leaves can be an alternative to spinach, while the pulp of the fruit can be soaked and blended into a drink.

Southern ground hornbill - Kruger National Park
The southern ground hornbill, is one of two species of ground hornbill, which are both found solely within Africa, and is the largest species of hornbill worldwide. It can be found in the southern regions of Africa, ranging from Kenya to South Africa. Within these regions, they inhabit both woodlands and savannas.

These birds are a long lived species, having lifespans in the range of 50–60 years, and up to 70 in captivity. In relation to their long lives, they do not reach sexual maturity until 4–6 years old, and begin breeding around 10 years old.

Southern ground hornbills are carnivorous and mostly hunt on the ground, where they find the majority of their food. This food ranges from insects to small animals. Their nests are often found in high in tree cavities or other shallow cavities, such as rock holes in cliff faces.

Guest review: Jacques Guichard, France. 18, 19 & 21 October 2019: Hi Ann, with my friends we thank you for organizing us these 3 days of Safari. Jurie is a very good guide, who put himself to our very average English. He explained the life of wildlife in the Kruger, he has a very sharp eye to see the snakes of the trees while driving. With him we could approach twenty lions, 1 leopard, 2 cheetahs, .......thank you again! We will be sure to give your addresses to our friends for their future safaris. Kind Regards Jacques.
