We are blessed to have retired to beautiful Witsand and to now stay in our holiday home long term. Anchors Away is therefore no longer available for holiday rentals. We will be doing some renovating and will post on here again when next available. Regards Sylvia

A wonderful holiday home situated on the hill over looking the Breede River and out to sea. Stunning Views.

Main bedroom upstairs has a queen-size bed and a single bed and has an en-suite bathroom with shower. The 2nd bedroom has twin beds (which are normally made up as a king size bed - they can be split if requested) and has a bathroom with shower and bath. There is another tiny room with a double bunk and washing machine - which is fine for overflow of children.
The house is therefore suitable for 4 Adults and 3 children.
All bedding and bath towels provided including electric blankets for the cold winter nights.
Anchors Away has a large open plan lounge/dining room and kitchen which steps down into an open plan braai room - lovely indoor braai with stunning views. The lounge has a fireplace, TV - 40 inch HD Sony, DVD player and radio. The kitchen is fully fitted with all you need including a dishwasher.

Witsand/Port Beaufort is situated at the mouth of the Breede River. It is a 3 hour drive from Cape Town and an excellent halfway stop en route to Knysna.

DAILY RATES when booking directly with us:
R1000 for up to 2 people sharing sharing and R300 per person extra up to 4 people and R150 per person extra – Maximum 7 people.
If 2 singles and taking 2 bedrooms the rate is R1200 per night for 2 to the house – extra linen and laundry required.
Long weekends, school holidays from R1600 for up to 4 people and R150 per person extra
December peak holidays not open for booking.
There is also a once off cleaning fee of R500, Plus a refundable breakage deposit of R1000 required.
DSTV R40 a night if requested.

VLAKTE MARATHON - The annual Vlakte Marathon is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 26 November 2022.

The route takes athletes from the inland town of Heidelberg to Witsand, which is known as the Whale Nursey of South Africa. The Vlakte Marathon consists of race distances for 42.2 km; 21.1 km; 10.4 km and a 5 km Fun Run, which makes the event ideal for all ages.

The Vlakte Marathon will also include a Beer Tent, Jumping Castle and Food Stalls for entertainment at the finish line.

WITSAND - Come and indulge yourselves in a treasure of exciting experiences, provided by nature. Port Beaufort is situated on the banks of the river and Witsand on the seaward side, where the river meets the mighty Indian Ocean. The village offers the best of both worlds with sea and river activities to enjoy. Witsand is known as The Whale Nursery of South Africa. This is due to the largest concentration of Southern Right Whales that are found in St. Sebastian Bay each year. In 2013, an aerial survey revealed that 82 new calves were born – the highest total ever! It is nothing unusual to see up to 70 whales in the bay at one time. No licenses for boat based whale watching – as there are various look-out points from which to view and photograph the Whales.

Long stretches of pristine beaches are complimented by wonderful displays of Cape fauna & flora on the short walking trails. Bird life abounds all around and includes the Black Oyster Catcher, and our national bird, the Blue Crane. The wide estuary of the Breede River is another natural wonder. Witsand is rich in historical value about the Barry family that opened up this area to commerce with a number of ships, the best known being the “Kadie”. The Barry Memorial Church built in 1859, is still in use today.

The bay and estuary provide a paradise for kite-boarders, snorkeling and SUP on flat water and wide open spaces – the Breede River is a popular location in the summer season. Fishing is a tradition in Witsand and the stories of those that were stranded or lost, are often a feature of entertaining evenings with the locals.

The Witsand Municipal Caravan and Camping Resorts are popular options for December holidays.
