Follow us to the famous Kuomboka Ceremony in Western Zambia 26.4.-30.4.2026:
The Kuomboka ceremony is well known across the world, admired for its vibrant colors and the spirited devotion of the Lozi people. At its heart lies the king’s symbolic passage “to dry land,” as he departs his palace in the Barotse Floodplain aboard the magnificent royal barge. With around 80 paddlers guiding it through the floodwaters, the vessel advances
to the opposite bank where tens of thousands of onlookers await in eager anticipation.
The atmosphere is charged—an extraordinary blend of tradition, spectacle, and collective pride. To fully immerse ourselves in the event, we set out in our own inflatable boats, granting us the freedom to follow the procession and secure the finest viewpoints. It is a long day, one that calls for endurance and composure. Yet to behold the energy and pride of the Lozi people as their king departs and arrives at his new residence is a memory that lingers—a truly unforgettable encounter.
