Although often referred to as a desert, the Kalahari is more accurately described as a 'thirstland' as the surface water from the rains rapidly drains through its deep, red sand. However, after the rainy season, the normally dry and arid savanna is covered with a variety of grasses and shrubs that attracts herds of Gemsbok and Sprinbok - and of course predators following these herds.

After all the rains in this season, the Kalahari is showing off its floral beauty.

Follow us to the famous Kuomboka Ceremony in Western Zambia 26.4.-30.4.2026:
The Kuomboka ceremony is well known across the world, admired for its vibrant colors and the spirited devotion of the Lozi people. At its heart lies the king’s symbolic passage “to dry land,” as he departs his palace in the Barotse Floodplain aboard the magnificent royal barge. With around 80 paddlers guiding it through the floodwaters, the vessel advances
to the opposite bank where tens of thousands of onlookers await in eager anticipation.
The atmosphere is charged—an extraordinary blend of tradition, spectacle, and collective pride. To fully immerse ourselves in the event, we set out in our own inflatable boats, granting us the freedom to follow the procession and secure the finest viewpoints. It is a long day, one that calls for endurance and composure. Yet to behold the energy and pride of the Lozi people as their king departs and arrives at his new residence is a memory that lingers—a truly unforgettable encounter.

Today is World Wetlands Day 2026:
Wetlands are the most threatened ecosystems on our planet - more than 60 % have disappeared since the beginning of the last century.
Although wetlands only cover 6% of the earth's surface, they are home and habitat for more than 40% of all animal and plant species and indispensable for our freshwater and food supply.
This iconic birds are a symbol for this habitat - the Stork perfectly adapted for living in the swamps of Bangweulu Wetland in Zambia.
