Have you ever heard the loud haunting calls of the Water Thick-knee near rivers, lagoons or wetlands at night? These remarkable birds are among Africa’s most fascinating and misunderstood water-loving birds.

🔎 WHY IS IT CALLED A WATER THICK-KNEE?

The Water Thick-knee gets its common name from two unique features:

✅ “Water” – because it is commonly found near rivers, lakes, wetlands and floodplains.
✅ “Thick-knee” – because of its noticeably enlarged knee joints, which help it walk and stand comfortably for long periods while searching for food.

Their scientific appearance and glowing yellow eyes make them one of the most striking birds to spot on safari.

🌙 WHAT TIME OF DAY ARE THEY ACTIVE — AND WHY?

Water Thick-knees are mostly nocturnal birds, meaning they are most active during the evening, night and early morning hours.
