🐕‍🦺 North Luangwa is known for their black rhino population within Zambia, amazing scenery, as well as their newer tourist community self-catering campsites. But within North Luangwa lies a shining initiative that is little known to the outside world, the Canine Unit. The highly effective detection unit started in late 2015 with 5 handlers and is currently on 5 dogs and 16 handlers. They have facilitated over 800 apprehensions with illegal wildlife products and aided in removing over 600 illegal fi****ms from the criminal system that were for poaching across the northern part of Zambia. North Luangwa Canine Unit proudly promotes gender equality, with currently with 10 women and 6 men, highly trained and extremely effective in the field. The NLCP links livelihoods and landscapes by selecting handlers directly from the communities around the national park, which gives rangers a sense of ownership and pride.

Over the past 6 years, several instances of Certification on the canine unit have been completed, allowing the unit to get outside opinions from some of the best canine practices in the world. American Society for Canine Trainers has been a big part of our growth and knowledge during every certification. During the last couple of months, we had a visit from Dr. Chris Aycock, the President of ASCT, for the certification of all 16 handlers and we are pleased to announce that all 7 newly trained handlers have passed the certification with some exceeding expectations.

Lusaka Animal Welfare Society

Lusaka Animal Welfare Society are dedicated to providing shelter, food and safety to the many strays, abandoned and mistreated animals in Lusaka.
Their free mobile clinics have vaccinated, spay or neutered, and treated over 5,000 animals that would not have had any medical treatment at all.
Their hard work to educate the public has reached out to the surrounding compounds and more people are seeking treatment for their sick or injured animals. The Wild Ride is proud to be donating £800 to LAWS!

If you would like to know more about LAWS and how you can support their mission please head to their page and give them a follow!

Zambezi donkey sanctuary
The Zambezi Working Donkey Project is a small charity with a simple goal: to improve the lives of working donkeys in Zambia. This is a lot easier said than done but none the less, the hard-working team at the Zambezi Working Donkey project have helped improve the lives of countless donkeys since the projects inception in 2019.
Through public education, rescue and rehabilitation and providing owners with suitable harnesses and carts the Zambezi Working Donkey project hopes to make a lasting and far reaching change in the way working donkeys are viewed and treated in Zambia.
The Wild Ride has raised £800 for the Zambezi Working Donkey Project!

We are working to relieve the suffering and promote the welfare of working donkeys and other equines in Zambia providing vetinary treatment, care and rescue & rehabilitation for these animals along with outreach programs to further education of their care, management and wellbeing.

Save the Zambezi!

Save the Zambezi is a relatively new organisation that first began in response to the planned Batoka Dam that would changed the Zambezi river irreversibly for many of its resident animals. It has since expanded and focuses on all aspects of human animal conflict along the Zambezi river and its surrounding towns and cities.

Save the Zambezi will be using funds from the Wild Ride to raise awareness, educate locals and organise getting the right people and equipment to the right place in times where quick action is the difference between life and death.

The Wild Ride will be donating £800 to allow Save the Zambezi to continue fighting for the wildlife that calls the Zambezi home.
Please follow The Wild Rides page for more information and updates on what Save the Zambezi are getting up to!

Very educational post that has drawn quite interesting comments, but first in the education ;

Did you know the black mamba, our most feared and poisonous snake is called black due to the colour of its mouth not skin

Did you know ticks attach themselves to snakes

Now to some of the comments, whT Re your thoughts ?

This is being selective in dealing with nature.

Why making ticks starve to death when nature is taking its course?

Why saving a more deadly snake at the expense of less deadly creatures(ticks).

Who said the black mamba was more important than the ticks?

They are part of nature and you select to deprive one of its food?

This is like stopping a lion killing an impala for food , why remove the ticks, let them feed
