If your kid has ever asked "were the Greek gods real?", Greece has an answer better than anything a textbook can give.

At Delphi, you stand where ancient kings and generals came to ask the Oracle for guidance - the stones and columns still carry that weight. At Olympia, you walk the original stadium where the first Olympic athletes competed two and a half thousand years ago. And at Knossos in Crete, the labyrinth where the Minotaur supposedly roamed is real enough to make the myth feel possible. Your child stops asking "is this real?" and starts asking "what happened here?" - and that's a completely different kind of curiosity.

Greece through mythology isn't a classics lesson. It's an entry point into history, philosophy, and the way human beings have always tried to make sense of the world.

If your kid is obsessed with ocean creatures, the Galápagos Islands are not a destination. They are an argument.

Marine iguanas that swim. Blue-footed bo***es that perform. Sea lions that sleep on benches like they own the place - because they do. In the Galápagos, the wildlife does not move away from you. It evolved without predators and has no reason to fear you. Your child can sit a metre from an animal that Darwin wrote about and watch it live its life. The question isn't "can I see it?" It's "what am I looking at?"

Interest-led travel in the Galápagos doesn't produce a child who knows about nature. It produces a child who genuinely cares about it.

Save this for when your ocean-obsessed kid is old enough to understand what they're seeing. The Galápagos rewards that.

There's a difference between a trip that works for everyone and a trip that entertains your kids. One is designed around your family. The other is designed to avoid complaints.

The trip designed to avoid complaints requires constant input - snacks, screens, queues, diversions. Everyone is managing something. The trip designed around your family requires a different kind of preparation: understanding what each person actually cares about, and finding the place where those interests overlap in the real world. That trip doesn't need to be managed. It runs itself.

A family that travels around their genuine curiosities doesn't fight over the itinerary. They fight over who gets to go back.

Save this. It's a useful frame for the next time you're trying to get everyone to agree.

If your kid is obsessed with cooking, the best thing you can do isn't enroll them in a class. It's take them somewhere food tells the whole story of a place.

In Marrakech, a morning market visit with a local cook - who selects ingredients your child has never seen, explains what the spices do and where they came from, and teaches a recipe that goes back centuries - produces a different kind of learning than any cookbook. In Bologna, a family-run pasta workshop where a grandmother and her daughter have been making tagliatelle since before your children were born will change how your kid understands tradition. Both trips start with curiosity and end with connection.

Food-led travel doesn't just teach children to cook. It teaches them that food is memory, history, and love - all at once.

You are allowed to want something more from your family holiday than controlled chaos in a pool.

The version of family travel that gets sold to you - the resort, the all-inclusive, the kids' club - is designed around one assumption: that parents and children need to be managed separately until the holiday is over. That assumption isn't wrong for every family. But it might be wrong for yours. If you've ever felt vaguely dissatisfied after a "perfect" holiday - the one that went exactly to plan and produced no real memories - you might be a family that needs something different.

You're not asking for too much. You're asking for the wrong thing. A meaningful trip isn't more expensive, more complicated, or more ambitious. It's just designed differently - from your family outward, not from a catalogue inward.
