“Paramount Chief" is not a traditional Ngoni title at all, but rather a colonial label imposed by the British military after defeating the Ngoni in 1898.

Before the British conquest, the actual traditional birthright title for the ruler was Inkosi YaMakhosi (King of Kings) or Inyandezulu.

Before our dearly departed Chief; Mpezeni I (1830–1900) was one of the most powerful African rulers in the region.

Following the death of King Zwangendaba around 1848, the Ngoni nation fractured. A group led by Prince Mpezeni traveled through present-day Malawi, crossed the Luangwa River, and eventually settled in the fertile lands of the Chipata area (Eastern Province of Zambia) in the 1870s.

Here, Mpezeni established a powerful state known for grain cultivation, cattle keeping, and military dominance.

During the late 19th century, Mpezeni found himself surrounded by agents of Cecil Rhodes' British South Africa Company (BSAC).

Unlike many other leaders, Mpezeni fiercely resisted European intrusion and refused to sign away his land or mineral rights.

In 1897, Mpezeni gathered over 4,000 warriors to reject these treaties. In early 1898, heavily armed British forces retaliated, leading to the defeat and subjugation of the Ngoni.

Despite the military loss, the British recognized his authority and he was permitted to rule as King of the Ngoni, with the title "Paramount Chief" introduced by the colonial administration. Mpezeni I died in September 1900.

David Njengambazo Jele was crowned as Mpezeni IV on June 19, 1982. Ruling for over 44 years, he was Zambia's longest-serving Paramount Chief.

His reign is best remembered for:

✅ The Nc'wala Ceremony: Under his leadership, the annual Nc'wala ceremony—held every February at Mtenguleni in Chipata—was revitalized and grew into one of Zambia's most prominent national cultural events.

✅ Cultural Preservation: He maintained deep ties with his ancestral roots in South Africa, attending the coronation of the Zulu King, and frequently emphasized Ngoni history and traditions.

Recent LegacyParamount Chief Mpezeni IV passed away on May 30, 2026, at the age of 75. His passing marked the end of a historic, four-decade reign that significantly shaped the preservation of Ngoni cultural heritage, unity, and traditional governance in Zambia's Eastern Province.

The china group is officially full. I only wanted 10 people for this trip. I don’t want to bite off more than I can chew coz it will be a packed trip with business sourcing and leisure activities. We shall be attending the phase 1 of the 2026 Canton fair so a small group will be easier to manage.

The Canton Fair (China Import and Export Fair) is the oldest and largest biannual trade exhibition in China. Hosted at the Canton Fair Complex (Pazhou Complex) in Guangzhou, it draws hundreds of thousands of buyers worldwide to connect directly with manufacturers across three distinct phases.

I have hosted group trips and I am extremely good at it BUT, I usually do this with family and friends. I know my familys’ and friends personalities, likes and dislikes which make it easier for me to navigate.

This will be my first time hosting people I will be meeting for the very first time. I am excited and “afraid”.

My fear is losing control of group dynamics, specifically managing clashing personalities, unpunctuality, and unexpected conflicts.

Interpersonal drama or logistical failures (having to wait for someone who is running late) ruins some experiences or delays scheduled activities.

BUT, I am hopeful for the best. I know we gonna have lots of fun and create meaningful connections and networks.

I will carry a shamboko just in case 😩😅
