DMMU COORDINATOR CALLS FOR REPOSITIONING OF LUNGA DISTRICT

‎Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), National Coordinator, Norman Chipakupaku, says there is need to reposition Lunga District into a major agricultural zone for the country, an attainment which will also make its reliance on relief food, a thing of the past.

‎Mr Chipakupaku said this when he conducted a working visit to Lunga District to assess food security, environmental risks, and disaster preparedness in the area.

‎Mr Chipakupaku commenced his visit with a courtesy call on Chief Kasoma Lunga, where discussions focused on the district’s persistent challenges and significant economic opportunities.

‎Mr Chipakupaku has expressed optimism about Lunga’s prospects.
‎He noted that despite recent setbacks such as pest infestations and climate-related shocks, the district’s arable soils and abundant water resources position it to become an agricultural hub.

‎"Repositioning this region's narrative of relief food dependency through enhanced agricultural activities, Lunga can be developed into a national supplier of rice, cassava, tomatoes, and other locally grown produce like Bananas which I have seen are grown here," he said.

Arial view of Kasoma Lunga, one among the many cluster of islands that makes up Lunga District. Lunga District is a cluster of about 14 Islands located in the Bangweulu wetlands. A settlement for the Unga speaking people and the area has been fast increasing in population despite having limited space for human habitation. In the yester years this area was known as a great fishing site but the deplition of fish due to bad fishing method coupled by population growth has seen the community finding its other strength in rice growing and steadily they have switched from fishing to Producing rice. Currently Lunga is the highest rice producing district in Luapula Province and may be among the top 5 rice producing districts in Zambia.
