African Hoofbeatz

African Hoofbeatz African Hoofbeatz is a family-run equestrian initiative, for the retraining of ex-racehorses into polocrosse.

Our Retraining of Racehorses Working Holiday offers overseas horse enthusiasts an immersive experience in horsemanship, polocrosse and safaris. African Hoofbeatz is primarily a Internship program developed to encourage overseas riders to come out to Africa and participate in and further develop the horse culture of our continent. Whether it be competing in shows and competitions or helping out in

a local horse riding school or working with equine vets on their call outs in the community. Horses are becoming more of a niche culture with every passing day, and with that we have more horse riders than Horsemen now days. African Hoofbeatz aims to provide a program that can both enrich our local African horse culture and that of the first world countries. There are very few places left it seems on this fine earth where we can shake off the restraints of man, and find out for ourselves just how far a horse will go to show the strength and loyalty that lies within his spirit. To show his speed on the track, nimbleness in the show ring and the very next day his boldness in the bush whilst chasing all things wild.

What if your next holiday made you a better rider?

Where you develop your confidence, your ability and your horsemanship while experiencing a completely different way of life.

Think your own string of horses. Riding every day. Retraining ex-racehorses. Learning polocrosse. Spending your weekends playing in actual tournaments around Zimbabwe.

Then taking one of the horses you’ve been working with away on a 3-night horseback safari through the Matopos.

That’s African HoofBeatz.

A 3–12 week horse riding working holiday where you live on a family smallholding outside Bulawayo, become part of the yard and spend a few weeks properly immersed in horses and life in Zimbabwe.

With a maximum of four participants, there’s loads of riding, individual coaching and the chance to develop your horsemanship rather than just ride while you’re away.

And somewhere between the yard, polocrosse, safari, braais and weekends away, you end up with a whole new group of friends too.

Perfect for gap years, university summers, equine students, vet students looking for an AHEMS placement, or riders who want to do something different.

And the best part is it costs a fraction of what most safaris and riding holidays cost ✨

This is your sign to book the horse riding adventure you keep saying you’ll do “one day” 🐎🇿🇼

Because sometimes saying yes really is where the best stories start.

African HoofBeatz is a 3–12 week horse riding working holiday in Zimbabwe for riders who want something more than an ordinary holiday.

Come for 3 weeks or stay for 12. Travel solo or come with a friend. Take a gap year, spend your university summer somewhere completely different, or just finally take the trip you’ve been putting off.

You don’t need to wait for the “perfect” time.

Maybe this is your sign to just go. ✈️

What makes this more than just another horse riding holiday?

It is not only the number of hours you spend in the saddle. It is everything you learn along the way.

You might arrive having never played polocrosse, never retrained an ex-racehorse and never imagined taking a horse on safari through the Zimbabwean bush.

Then, day by day, you begin to ride with more confidence, understand horses more deeply and see what they are capable of when given the right training and support.

For experienced riders, equestrian students and vet students completing AHEMS, African HoofBeatz offers the kind of hands-on equine experience that is difficult to find at home.

You will learn polocrosse, develop your horsemanship, work with performance horses, gain practical veterinary and equine experience and become part of a small, family-run yard in Zimbabwe.

But the part people often remember most is not something you can put on a CV.

It is the friendships, the confidence and the feeling of having been part of something real.
