WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE HYDROMETRIC STATIONS ALONG THE ZAMBEZI RIVER AND ITS MAJOR TRIBUTARIES?

The hydrometric network used for flood warning system, flow forecasting and reservoir operation at Kariba comprises thirteen (13) Gauge Reading Stations where water levels are monitored daily.

Flow measurements are carried out at eight of these stations which include the Victoria Falls, one of the key stations on the Zambezi River.

During a tour of the stations which commenced on 8th January 2024, we’ll introduce you to eleven (11) stations and share some brief information about them. We'll share short video clips and we hope you'll find them informative.

Gentle and elusive — dugongs are often called the “sea cows” of the ocean.

This World Dugong Day, we spotlight these vulnerable marine mammals, which play a key role in maintaining healthy seagrass beds — a crucial carbon sink and feeding ground for many species.

Dugongs are found in warm coastal waters from East Africa to Australia, including Mozambique’s Indian Ocean waters, where Akashinga operates. But their populations are declining due to habitat loss, fishing gear entanglement, and boat strikes.

Protecting dugongs means protecting entire marine ecosystems. Through community education and sustainable fishing initiatives, we’re working to safeguard these gentle grazers.

Spanning the mighty Zambezi River between Zambia and Zimbabwe, the Kariba Dam holds back Lake Kariba-the largest man-made lake in the world by reservoir storage capacity. A true marvel where engineering meets natural splendour. 🌍💧⚡

Wishing all our wonderful followers a restful and refreshing weekend!
