This chapter of the Ngorongoro highlands began 2.5 million years ago. Distant enough in the past that a cousin of our beloved elephant that we know today was likely a character, the deinotherium bozasi, pictured in this carousel, a beautiful illustration that I struggle to credit properly - it seems drawn by a J Comord and owned by a Concavenator, correct please where wrong.
Yes, our proboscidean pachyderm had many similar species most of which sported a fused upper lip and nose, tusks, and varied between the size of a small pig and some behemoths that dwarfed even the largest elephant we know today. Bozasi, let’s pretend, grazing away on the Serengeti plains would have heard a great explosion and seen the sky darken as one of the largest volcanic eruptions of all time began and so did a story that we, today, get to travel down.
As the ash, smoke and molten lava settled the volcano caved in on itself, at some point, leaving a crater-like structure. Over millennia, the rich volcanic soils attracted an abundance of plant and, then, animal life. A splendour that, at the right time of year, we get to be utterly mesmerised by in present day.
One of our most trusted partners, , treat our guests to a unique stay, to put it lightly, whilst perched on the crater rim of Ngorongoro before or after your descent to the crater floor in search of all it secrets. The Highlands lodge is worthy of long rant and rave about how incredible the stay is here but we will let the photos do the talking this time…yes…that is a sauna!
looks forward to multiple safaris that include The Highlands and Ngorongoro crater in their circuit this year. As always we know our guests will absolutely love the experience!
