🌊🐘 Botswana's Okavango Delta Is Having an Exceptional Water Year! 🐘🌊

One of the most common questions we receive is: "How are the Okavango water levels looking?"

The answer for 2026 is very encouraging....and strong!!

The Okavango Delta is experiencing one of its most impressive flood seasons in many years. Fueled by exceptional rainfall in the Angolan Highlands, strong local summer rains across northern Botswana, and already saturated ground conditions, the annual floodwaters have spread extensively throughout the Delta. Long-dormant channels have reopened, floodplains have expanded, and the entire ecosystem has been revitalized, creating spectacular conditions for both wildlife and visitors alike.

What does this mean for safari travelers?

🐘 More extensive waterways and connected channels
🐘 Excellent mokoro and boating opportunities
🐘 Beautiful floodplain scenery and photography
🐘 Outstanding birdlife throughout the Delta

The Okavango is unique because the flood arrives during Botswana's dry season. While the surrounding Kalahari is drying out, water from Angola slowly works its way south, typically peaking between June and August and often remaining high into September.

For those considering Botswana in 2026 or 2027, this is shaping up to be one of those memorable seasons where the Delta truly showcases why it is considered one of the greatest wildlife destinations on Earth.

Having recently spoken with many of our partners and guides on the ground, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Channels are reopening, floodplains are reconnecting, and the Delta is looking absolutely magnificent.

These incredible species span every color, size, and habitat imaginable — wetlands, forests, savannahs, lakes, and mountains — and many can also be found across other regions of East and Southern Africa. For bird lovers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts alike, they are one of the continent’s most underrated treasures and an unforgettable part of the safari experience.

One of the last remaining hunter-gatherer tribes on Earth… the Hadzabe bushmen of Tanzania.

What was most striking wasn’t just the hunting skills or the way they move through the bush with such awareness — it was how knowledge is passed down. Not through books or written language, but through voice, sound, storytelling, and generations of oral tradition.

Young boys walk beside their fathers and elders from an early age, learning animal calls, tracking, survival, and the rhythms of the bush itself. Every sound means something (see the video with interpreter!)

Watching the children already carrying bows, tracking with the dogs, and listening around the fire was incredibly humbling. In a rapidly modernizing world, cultures like this remind us of humanity’s oldest connection to nature, tradition, and community. 🌍🔥🏹
