When people think of Tanzania and African safaris, they often picture lions, elephants, and the Great Migration… but the birdlife is equally extraordinary. From from Rollers glowing with color to majestic raptors soaring overhead, Africa’s birds add an entirely different dimension to the wilderness experience.

These incredible species span every color, size, and habitat imaginable — wetlands, forests, savannahs, lakes, and mountains — and many can also be found across other regions of East and Southern Africa. For bird lovers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts alike, they are one of the continent’s most underrated treasures and an unforgettable part of the safari experience.

One of the last remaining hunter-gatherer tribes on Earth… the Hadzabe bushmen of Tanzania.

What was most striking wasn’t just the hunting skills or the way they move through the bush with such awareness — it was how knowledge is passed down. Not through books or written language, but through voice, sound, storytelling, and generations of oral tradition.

Young boys walk beside their fathers and elders from an early age, learning animal calls, tracking, survival, and the rhythms of the bush itself. Every sound means something (see the video with interpreter!)

Watching the children already carrying bows, tracking with the dogs, and listening around the fire was incredibly humbling. In a rapidly modernizing world, cultures like this remind us of humanity’s oldest connection to nature, tradition, and community. 🌍🔥🏹

Battle-hardened.

The ‘club footed’ Ndhzenga male is recovering after being ambushed by 3 younger, unknown males. However, it does appear that he’s been knocked off his perch as the most dominant in his coalition of 4. Will he reclaim the top spot once he’s made a full recovery?
