No city lights. No light pollution. Just millions of stars stretched across the velvet African night. 🌌✨

Because of our remote location, early September offers some of the clearest night skies you will ever witness. Sitting on the deck after dinner, listening to the night calls while the Milky Way shines brightly overhead, is an unforgettable experience.

In late August and September, Hwange's solar pumps become the lifeline of the bush. If you sit at the pan, you will witness a fascinating battle for the freshest water. 🐘

Here is how the waterhole hierarchy actually plays out when resources get tight:

The Dominant Bulls, especially ones in musth, hold absolute authority. He will march straight to the pump head where fresh water enters, and even defensive matriarchs will give him a wide berth to protect their young.

Breeding Herds & Matriarchs: When no dominant bulls are actively claiming the pipe, senior females lead their families in. The matriarch secures the cleanest flow for her calves, using her weight to keep younger herd members in order.

Bachelor Pressure: Sub-adult and younger bachelor bulls often hover around the edges, waiting for a gap or drinking from the spillover pools until the larger herds or older males move off.

The Dust Bath Protocol: Drinking always comes before mud-wallowing or dusting. Once thirst is quenched, they move to the muddy margins to coat their skin against the harsh late-season heat.

Patience is the secret to great game viewing. Next time you sit on the deck, watch how the dynamics shift the moment a big bull steps out of the teak woodland!

Keep your binoculars handy; Hwange isn't just about the megafauna! 🐦🎨

While elephants and lions get most of the spotlight, our surrounding bush is bursting with vibrant birdlife. Here are two feathered residents recently spotted by and around camp.

The waterholes around Kapula attract hundreds of bird species throughout the dry season. How many bird species have you ticked off on your safari list?

Good food, great company, and genuine bush hospitality. 🥩🥔⚽

As Henk noted after his recent trip: "The viewing deck, kitchen, and braai area were all very adequate to our needs."

Self-catering at Kapula gives you complete freedom to cook your favourite meals on your own schedule. But what really makes a stay special is our team on the ground. When Henk and his family wanted to catch South Africa playing in the FIFA World Cup, our camp staff were more than happy to help them tune in via Starlink! Whether it's stoking your evening braai fire, keeping the camp serviced, or helping you catch a big game, our staff are always here to make you feel right at home in the wild.

Ever wondered why game-stalking predators hate this bird? The Grey Go-Away-Bird alerts the entire bush when a threat (or a safari vehicle!) approaches.
