The Zambezi Expedition is one of our multi-day trail experiences, taking us deep into some of the more remote corners of Zambezi National Park, where we can slow down, disconnect from the outside world, and truly immerse ourselves in the wilderness.

This was morning two of our four-day trail, waking after a night accompanied by the haunting chorus of lions, hyenas and jackals. There’s something incredibly special about lying beneath the stars, listening to the wild unfold around you, and waking to another day with nothing but the bush ahead.

It’s moments like these that remind us why we love being out here, far from the noise of everyday life, with nothing but you and the wild.

We were lucky enough to find the resident pack of Wild Dogs and witness them on a hunt.

After finding the pack, we followed them as they moved away from the river towards a spring line. Having lost sight of them, but suspecting they were circling back towards the river, we managed to catch up just as they broke into pursuit of an impala ram.

The impala ultimately evaded capture by braving the Zambezi River. After a few minutes, the wild dogs lost interest and continued on with their hunt, a truly incredible encounter with one of Africa’s most remarkable predators.

A day in the Zambezi National Park with The Victorian Safari Company.

A day dedicated to discovering everything from the largest mammals to the smallest insects, and understanding how each plays a vital role in the precious ecosystems that sustain the beautiful wilderness we are fortunate to call home.

Through exploration, observation, and learning, whether on foot or by vehicle, we gain a deeper appreciation for the intricate connections that keep this remarkable landscape thriving. Every track, call, plant, and creature tells a story, reminding us that even the smallest components are essential to the health and balance of the wild places we cherish.

As the Zambezi National Park slowly dries out and the African winter begins to settle in, it signals the return of one of my favourite times of year — our Zambezi Expedition Primitive Trails.

This video takes me back to a truly unforgettable trail from the 2025 season. The wild beauty, the quiet moments, the crackling campfires, and the feeling of being completely immersed in Africa’s wilderness.

Now, with a new season upon us, I find myself looking forward to the incredible adventures, stories, and moments that await during the 2026 trail walking season.

What an incredible way to finish off a full day safari! Even more remarkable was spotting a second leopard, after spending 30 minutes with this young female, we found her mother just a few kilometres down the road.

An incredible scene unfolded while we were having brunch on the river. A female elephant and her calf were being swept downstream in the high waters of the Zambezi.

It all happened in a blur, yet somehow felt like it lasted forever. As the mother and calf bobbed helplessly in the deep, fast-moving current, there was only a sliver of hope they might reach the safety of a small island ahead. They drifted past it, carried closer and closer to the rapids. At last, the mother managed to find her footing, grounding herself in the shallows, but it was too deep for the calf, which was swept further downstream.

The calf was carried through the rapids, past a pod of hippos, before finally scrambling its way to the riverbank. Not long after, the mother followed.

Tension still hung thick in the air, the calf trumpeting, the mother rumbling, until they found each other once more. Reunited, they disappeared back into the bush, ready to carry on with another day.
