Before you visit Abu Dhabi’s most iconic mosque, here’s a little story you might not know… 👀
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was born from Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s vision of creating a place that would celebrate Islamic architecture, culture and the diversity of the world.
Construction began in 1996, and the mosque was completed in 2007. Sheikh Zayed wanted the mosque to reflect openness, beauty and cultural exchange - bringing together architectural influences from different Islamic traditions around the world.
Today, it stands as one of Abu Dhabi’s most remarkable landmarks, famous for its 82 domes, 1,000+ columns, reflective pools, Swarovski crystal chandeliers and the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet.
Before You Go - Our Tips
01 | Dress appropriately
The mosque is a place of worship, so modest clothing is required. Shoulders and knees should be covered.

The white marble looks beautiful in daylight, while sunset brings a completely different atmosphere.

The reflective pools, domes and marble walkways make almost every angle photo-worthy.

Opening hours and visitor access can vary, especially around Fridays, public holidays and religious occasions.

Keep voices low, follow the visitor guidelines and remember that this is an active place of worship.
