Croisi Europe River Cruise
Earlier this year we spotted an itinerary which took in a concert at Maastricht with Andre Rieu which was a bucket list item for us.

This departed Amsterdam on 16 July, to Rotterdam, Antwerp and on to Brussels on MS LaFayette which has 42 cabins for 78 guests. There are several single cabins available. The guests were mainly French, this being a French cruise line and only three of us spoke English. The cruise cost includes beer, wine, soft drinks, tea and coffee; however other than the concert, all other excursions were at extra cost.

The Croisi dock is just across from the railway station and took us around 10 minutes to walk from the hotel via the railway station to board. Boarding is at 6pm and we were early, so our bags were put on board and we went sightseeing to fill in time. When we got back, we waited in the lounge bar until we were checked in and got our room keys. We were told that we would be seated at a set table with other English speakers.

Unlike other premium river cruises, excursions are not included. A canal cruise in Amsterdam was EUR56 if purchased prior to the cruise, but if you walked up to the ticket office opposite the railway station on the day, you could get the same cruise for EUR21. We did purchase the excursions to Volendam and Zaanse Schans to see the d**e and the windmill village, plus another to see the Hague area. Both tours were in French until the tour guides discovered that we spoke English and then we were given private commentaries.

Croisi meals on board were excellent, however it is a set menu for everyone, unless you have special dietary requirements. Breakfast was a buffet offering a hot breakfast or the usual European style cheese, pastries or fruit. We were seated with a lady from Malta at a set table for each meal and once we decided which wine to drink, our server gave us the bottle to look after, She spoke good English but many of the crew were reluctant to use it.
The language barrier is always a problem; the French do not like using it but usually understand and speck it well. When an announcement was given in the lounge, it was always in French, but the officers came and gave us a translation so that we knew what was happening. By the end of the trip, we had discovered that many passengerscould speak English. Entertainment was party games organised by the crew and mostly in French

The highlight was our excursion to see the Andre Rieu concert. All the guests were loaded on to two coaches for the two-hour trip by road to Maastricht with a stop to eat at a hotel there. There was a large buffet set out for many groups transiting to the concert. Each seat had a cushion with a welcome card and postcards from Andre Rieu Travel. There we were handed out our seating for the concert before getting back on the coach for the concert. Our driver then missed the coach parking sign and got lost until we stopped at a bus stop and followed the crowd through the old town area to the town square.

We were seated about halfway back on the left side of the town square, and the crowd was massive- 200,000 over six nights was one report. Having seen to his concerts at the movies, we knew what to expect but being there was still mind blowing. A really great event and a bucket list item ticked off. The concert started at 9pm and finished after mid-night, with a short break.

Back on the coaches to return to Antwerp, our driver got lost again, then couldn’t find the ship as the tide had gone down and you could not see the ship. Someone rang the ship and the crew came out and waived torches to show the way. It was after 3am when we got to bed.

Next day we cruised up to Brussels and docked out of town at a container wharf. Croisi offered to book a taxi for us at EUR70 but cost of an Uber was EUR33 to the hotel. When you work the average of converting AUD to EUR, it is almost AUD2 to one Euro, so prices are not cheap.

Overall Croisi Europe river cruises are very good, covering many of the rivers in Europe. Food is excellent even though no real choice. Our cabin was small but had everything required with the balcony door. Language is a problem and no laundry service available;
internet and TV choice was limited in some areas that we passed through. It is good value for the prices paid.

Croisi have river cruises all over Europe and Asia, plus ocean going ships. For more information, contact us on [email protected]

We have just returned from Europe after doing an AMAWaterways trip down the Rhine followed by a Croisi river cruise that included a concert with Andre Rieu at Maastricht .
This was our first river cruise experience after many ocean cruises, totally different as river cruises are more personal and smaller.
The AMA Serena had mainly Americans with a few British, two New Zealanders plus us on board to a total of 160 guests with 51 crew. The Lark Lounge contained the bar where included drinks were available for the cocktail hour and afterwards, a small gift shop, tea and coffee machine plus snacks during the day.
Meals in the restaurant were excellent, with both buffet and menu options available, and wine or beer served with meals. The ship also offered an evening Chef’s Table at the rear, limited to small groups, which also served as an Italian-style lunch venue.
Sightseeing tours are included in the cost and included biking or hiking with others by coach. Local entertainment was also brought on board for the evenings. Internet was good and a laundry service was available at extra cost.
We were scheduled to go from Basel to Amsterdam, but low water levels stopped us at Strasbourg. All guests were asked to meet in the lounge for a briefing by the cruise manager who explained that we had to pack up and leave bags outside our doors early next morning. There were four buses arranged to come from Prague to take us to visit Heidelberg, do a local KD Rhine cruise to the Rhine Gorge, then on to Lahnstein to join AMA Venita. Everyone had the same cabin number again as they had on the AMA Serena and our cabin even had the same painting on the wall. Our bags were carried from the buses by the captain and the crew to be delivered to our cabins. We were sent to the bar while this happened.
Lucy James, our cruise manager and AMA organised this change over in less than a day and proved that AMA is an excellent product. At Cologne, I counted over 12 river ships tied up and several had just put their guests on buses for the rest of the trip or cancelled the remainder.
Due to the river level problem, we experienced two AMA sister ships, the crew were great on both and the food and service were excellent. Only downfall was at Amsterdam where they dock way out of town, and it was EUR85 to get to our hotel in the city by taxi.
Overall, AMAWaterways is an excellent option at good value, drinks and tours included in the cost. The gift on arrival is also a nice touch.

Currently on an AMA Waterways cruise of the Rhine. Started off from Basel on the AMA Serena but due to low water levels, we had to pack up and change ships. On to coaches with our baggage and off on a two-hour trip to Heidelburg for a short tour and lunch, then on the bus again to catch a local KD Rhine tour boat to see the George and the Rhine Castles.
River level is extremely low and went down quicker than expected. Lots of boats stuck upriver and more below the low water part. Our change over was extremely well organised with four coaches that came from Prague! Even the ships captains at both ends were assisting the crew with bags from the coaches to the rooms. Not an easy thing to move 160 people. Our Cruise director moved with us to the next ship and Lucy is a lovely bubbly person with heaps of knowledge.
We joined the AMA Venita at Lahnstein and caught up with some of the missed tours followed by an evening recital with a fantastic string trio. Now we are cruising towards Cologne.
