Hanging out

Mount Ngungun is another one of those mountains where a little hike rewards you with stunning views.

The story goes that one day Tibrogargan, the father, noticed that ocean was rising and started to gather all his children together to move them to safety. He asked the eldest son Coonowrin to look after his mother. Unaware she was pregnant and terrified of the storm, Coonowrin flees the impending danger on his own, which infuriates his father. Tibrogargan runs after his son and strikes him so hard that he dislocates Coonowrin’s neck.

Mt Coonowrin is the most recognisable of all the mountains due to his narrow peak of crooked rock at the top which looks like a broken neck.

You can look out to Coonowrin from Mount Ngungun.

The Glass House Mountains are spiritually significant to the Jinibara and Gubbi Gubbi peoples and while Tibrogargan and Beerwah are open for climbing, traditional owners request visitors not to climb them.
