Some of the best trips are the ones that look effortless from the outside.

This one moved through five countries: Berlin, down to the Croatian coast, and every leg had its own reason to linger.

That's the pull of a journey like this. Berlin's history in every laneway. Slow afternoons in Madrid. Portugal's easy charm, then the Riviera and the Adriatic to see it out. Trips this full only work when the parts between them are handled properly, the transfers, the timing, the days that run into one another without a hitch.

Most people see Santorini in a single frame. Blue domes, white walls, that impossible drop to the sea. It's earned every bit of the attention.

But a photo can't tell you what the island feels like once the day-trip boats pull away. Pyrgos in the late afternoon with barely a soul about. Wine grown in black volcanic soil, poured a few steps from the vine. A slow swim off the rocks at Amoudi as the heat finally lifts.

That's the Santorini I love, and it's the one worth planning for. The right village to base yourself in. Stays that sit above the noise. Days with enough room in them to actually slow down.

Most people don't think of Sri Lanka when they think of safari.

Wild Coast Tented Lodge sits right on the edge of Yala National Park, where the jungle runs out and the Indian Ocean takes over.

Mornings start early with a game drive. By breakfast you are back, and there is nothing much to do until the afternoon drive but swim, read and eat extremely well.

It is one of those rare places that feels adventurous without asking very much of you.

Everyone tells you to stay in Oia. I don't always send people there.

Fira is the island's heart. Central, well connected, and alive in a way the postcard villages aren't, which makes it a smart base if you actually want to see Santorini rather than photograph one corner of it. Astro Palace is my kind of place here. Named after the stars, quietly done, and close to everything without putting you in the middle of the crowds.

People ask me if they are too old for this. Almost always, they are not.

The walk is harder than it looks in photographs. But you can take it slowly, you can take a porter, and nobody is racing you. What matters far more is the planning: which country, which sector you trek from, and whether you have something soft to come back to at the end of it.

Get those three right and the rest looks after itself - that's where I come in.
